I learned on a late 1970’s Ford F150, also no power steering or brakes. I’ll find one somewhere to teach my son, but he can drive tractors and fly single engine planes, so I figure he’ll pick it up easily enough.

I think back on my truck that had MANUAL steering and a stick shift … how in the fuck I managed to drive that fucker is amazing.

I learned on the ultimate piece of shit, a 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout with 3 on the tree. Decades later my nephew was showing off his new car, an Audi A4, and he was taking me around. He cheekily offered to let me drive, thinking I'd be totally lost. I did stall once as I hadn't driven stick in twenty or so years, but it all came back to me and I made that car sing. My nephew looked at me with awe and respect.

I had only driven that old truck for a couple years when a friend of mine with a little Toyota stick offered to let me drive (had a huge crush on her, but she never operated my stick, sigh). I remember thinking, “holy shit, this is so easy. Bought my own stick shift a year later, learned how to shift that fucker with just the right rpms.

Right, like I didn’t actually look at the rpm, it was just the feel/sound of the car. I miss that little 4 speed. Got my first speeding ticket in it for going 20 over the speed limit. Nice state trooper though, he knocked it down to just 15 so I didn’t get a reckless driving.

Almost everyone here over the age of 25 who can drive, can drive a manual.

We also make our kids learn a manual just in case they need it ever.

I love driving a manual car. Sure occasionally it can be annoying. But you just feel so connected to it.

Plus I feel like a race car driver.
