Why do YOU give 1star votes on other people's stories?

Exactly!!! Good for you and thank you. It takes a fair amount of courage to push that 'Publish' button. I think that all of the contributing authors here on Lit want to encourage new authors, even if the story leaves a lot to be desired... At least someone took the time and effort to put something together. Unlike the 'anonymous' commentators who probably couldn't put two sentences together that made any sense.

Again... Good for you!!

What if the story doesn't have a trigger warning, but it includes themes like rape, incest, or gay sex? (I was a bit shocked that someone above gave it a 1-star rating for MM scenes, but hey, people have different preferences.) Would you give it a one-star rating in that case? Or would you simply let it be? Or would you leave a comment with your complaints?

I don't give 1-stars. If a story doesn't do it for me, for whatever reason, I just move on. I my humble opinion, there's too much negativity in the world. Just don't want to be part of that. And like i said, "At Least someone took the time and effort to put something together".

It's commendable. I gave one stars on two occasions when there was no trigger warning and there was a rape scene(father/daughter). No tags, no warnings. But I agree, there is too much negativity in general. If the story has elements not to my taste, I just leave it be. I stumbled upon a scat scene (the guy was literally swimming in poo), but I just left it without giving it one star.
I don't see how swimming in poo hurts anyone, anyway, right? :)

Same.
I give good stories 5 stars.

I've only given 4s and 5s. A story that would warrant a 3-level or below (usually because of the writing) just doesn't hold my interest long enough to finish it.

I have sent suggestions on style to those who include a request for feedback, or identify as newbies. I've appreciated help and suggestions on my stories and try to pay it forward--at least to the extent of my ability.

I usually leave a 4 or 5 star rating, with a few 3s thrown in. I have never left a 1 star. If it starts out badly, I just cut my losses and go find another one. However, just last week I read one through and left a very generous 2 star. That was a 5 chapter story that hooked me right from the get go. As the story progressed the author got progressively sloppier with grammar while amping up the ridiculous nature of the sexual escapades. It was as if he started typing with one hand. I was curious how he would end it, so I kept reading, all the while trying to speed read to the end. Not the worst I've read by a long shot, but because I got hooked early on and couldn't quit, I felt like poking his eyes out when I finished.

I usually give a rating of 3 to 5.

I'll give a 5 if it's a fetish I enjoy, a decently written story line, and reasonably good writing style. Sometimes, I'll give it a 5 if it's an new author's first attempt, even if the writing style isn't that good.

I'll give a story a 3 if it's a repetitive, well-worn trope, with a basic attempt at writing. It's as if the author has little imagination but has a writing degree in English and wants to try their hand at writing porn.

I think after years and years of reading stories on LitE, I've only ever given one or two 1s, due to no imagination, the "story" being nothing more than an outline of a story concept, and it's something I could as easily and descriptively summarized in one paragraph!

(ie. "I'm a clueless husband, but my wife's a whore because she fucked my brother/father/boss/best friend!" Now add only an additional 700 words and call it a story.)

i would not.
most stories i finish, 4
stories i finish and think WOW! get 5
stories i don't like i don't finish and don't rate

Never have given a 1 star to any story. If it was that bad I usually jump right out, it's not worth my time to vote.

I don't ever give a one star rating. If I like a story, I will rate it accordingly, if not, I simply move on.

I have never, nor will I ever give one star to a story.

Even a story that’s poorly written will usually get 3 stars. I’ve had a few people testing out stories. I try to give them at least 3-4 and constructive feedback.

It takes a lot to write a story, and simply putting in that type of work, will get you 3-4 stars minimum.

I never give one star ratings on a story. If it's so poorly written as to perhaps deserve such a rating, I'm already disengaged and moving on down the line. I figure a one star rating is more like a slap in the face than of any useful purpose. As a contributing author here on Lit, I know the level of effort that's involved to write and post a story here. More likely, I'll just leave a comment that hopefully includes a few words of advice that might help the author improve on the next story.
You could say it's a slap in the face, but it's not like we know what each user votes, we only see what we assume is the total average of votes- by star, not by person. So six 4s and a 2 is like, I guess, 4.xx. Or it could be an average of each star and how many. Shrugs.

I don't read much here and vote even less, which is hardly ever. I certainly wouldn't give a one for childish, trivial, bullshit ass reasons. If I don't like something for those reasons, I'm not even taking the time to scroll all the way past where I noped out just to give somebody a one. If I were to give a one, it would be because the story is bad, not because it has something "bad" in it. I've read bad stories where it wasn't the story that was bad, but the execution of said story was bad. Sometimes the story itself was good, if you could trudge through it- anybody who's read enough on FFN or AO³ knows what I mean.

Typically I can't be bothered. The mobs of cretinous chucklefucks often think their stickin' it to the man or teaching them a lesson... to be completely or nearly foiled by sweeps.
