What makes a good author?

An author achieves "good" status when language is no longer a barrier to telling a story, but rather a tool to turn a story into a roller coaster ride.

I agree with an earlier post about innate talent being the primary factor enabling novice writers to get to the next level. Without the innate talent, mastering the tools - structure, premise, plot, character development etc. - will likely have the same results as trying to hang ornaments on a Christmas tree with no trunk.

(That's why I'm posting in this thread instead of trying to fix my crappy stories. )
