One can do anything with the proper amount of epoxy and $100 bills. Sometimes, no epoxy is required and it's all about the money.

And summer up here is Road Construction Time. Most everything had just wound down from the late season work. Road construction has been very lucky these past few years with winter holding off longer than it used to. Right after the earthquake hit, before notification from AKDOT, the guy who runs the QAP asphalt plant started warming up the plant in anticipation of work. Since it takes a couple days to warm up a plant from cold shut down, he had the edge on everyone else.
 
I had a friend in the Army (this was '73-76) who was stationed in Alaska in 1964. He had some incredible pictures, a whole scrapbook.
I don't see how anyone got out of that alive.
 
Not the best day to drive to Valdez.

ROAD CLOSURE: The Richardson Highway is closed from mile 18-42 due to an avalanche at mile 39, this is in Thompson Pass. Heavy snow is falling.
UPDATE at 8am: Crews estimate the avalanche is 50 feet wide and eight feet deep. We are working to clear the road and the avalanche debris. The Richardson Highway should reopen today between approximately 4-8pm.
