Thinking Like a Conservative

Instead of telling us to read something, explain it in your own words. If you cannot do that, you do not understand it. Anyone can find something on the internet that confirms what they believe in. Tossing links back and forth gets boring.

Applicable to all C&P threads and words to live by.

Thank you!

Thinking Like a Conservative (Part Three): On Shutting Down Government

Nation magazine

Rick Perlstein on September 30, 2013 - 3:02 PM ET

There’s something worse now. Many movement conservatives are driven, if implicitly, by a terrifying intellectual foundation not even present in Goldwater’s day: the Christian Reconstructionist view that, since the family is the basic unit of God’s covenant, the secular humanist state is a false idol held up by minions like Obama (and you) in order to mock all that is godly—a well-nigh Satanic rival for the redemption of the world.

There are many ways to interpret the Bible. There are several ways to interpret predictions pertaining to the Second Coming of Christ.

The belief that Jesus will come again soon, perhaps preceded by the Rapture, implies an indifference to politics. Why bother with fornicators, pornographers, and abortion doctors when Jesus will soon come, and they will be judged and sent to Hell?

To those who believe that Jesus will come again soon, the spread of immorality can be seen as signs of the times, because St. Paul said, "There will be a falling off first."

Christian Reconstruction answers the desire activists of the religious right have to be politically active. Christian Reconstructionism holds that Jesus will not come until the world has adhered to Biblical morality for one thousand years. This includes obedience to most of the Torah, although St. Paul said the only part of the Law of Moses binding for Christians is the Ten Commandments.

Christian Reconstruction in effect calls for the creation of a totalitarian theocracy that conquers the world.

That must scare secular people. Nevertheless, Christian Reconstruction has never been the creed of any but a minority of the religious right. Most of these expect the imminent Second Coming, without a thousand year reign to come before.

Moreover, the religious right is fading as a force to be reckoned with in the United States. The leaders of the Republican Party never really cared about its agenda. Beyond giving the religious right lip service, Ronald Reagan did nothing to advance its agenda.

I have read all of King Orfeo's copy and paste job. It complains about how the Republican Party has been moving to the right. It does not explain how the Republican Party has been able to keep winning elections.

The average standard of living has been declining since Bill Clinton left office. Nevertheless, the rich keep getting richer. The GOP did splendidly in the last election.

The Republican Party is committed to making the rich still richer, while defunding domestic spending programs that help middle and working class Americans. Why has there not been a political backlash?

I have ideas on the topic. I wonder if King Orfeo has. If he has no original ideas on the topic, I would like to see how well he is able to convey the ideas of others using his own words.

I will even be nice in this post ... we shall see if you can be too.

when you say the "average standard of living" has been declining, you are using a broad brush to paint with. if you take a look at technology related jobs, those incomes have actually been increasing. also, if you look at banking and investing (especially on Wall Street) those salaries are skyrocketing.

part of the decline, people need to make better career decisions and better choices when it comes to education. one can only describe one as being insane to waste $100,000 for a job that pays $35,000.

while I'm typically against getting "government" involved in anything, our education system has been over taken by greedy bastards. what they charge for "college" education is criminal.

They've been able to win elections because the rich are getting richer and fund them generously.

The median income adjusted for inflation has been declining since Bill Clinton left office.

Lets define social classes first: If youre self-employed youre MIDDLE CLASS. If you collect a paycheck from others youre PROLETARIAT. If you live off a trust fund youre ELITE. That's how its sorted out. So to say the middle class is fucked over is talking about self employed people, cuz the minute you accept money from anyone but a customer youre a working stiff regardless of how much they pay you. Queen Elizabeth is a working gal cuz she collects a government check and other benefits. Ditto Obama.

Now lets look at political classes: The Liberal/Progressive is a government agent who advocates for and advances government causes. The STATE is numero uno in their constellation of priorities. The conservative is an agent of the self employed, they carry water for the middle-class entrepreneur. They are the governments natural antagonist. Libertarians are lone wolves antagonistic to liberal or conservative mobs. Hands off their money and their drugs.

Do you know the feeling when your read something and you ask yourself: is he really thinking that way? Or did he just want to insult his reader ?

Then I guess Bill Gates is middle class.

No one can be said to understand a point of view unless that person can describe that point of view in such a way that a person adhering to that point of view will agree that it is an accurate description.

Liberals believe that the government is needed to help most people get through life. They do not see a powerful government as an end in itself.

Ideologues and partisans typically describe their side, and the side of their adversaries, in ways that compare their highest ideals with the worst reality of the other side.

Sure, exactly like you just did.

Those factors still do not explain the absence of a backlash against what the Republicans have been doing.

When one is trying to analyse any social movement, there are often a number of factors that contribute and rarely any single one factor that provides a definitive explanation.

Gerrymandering was not intended to be a single explanation, but one possible explanation among many.

You said you had some thoughts on the issue. I think I'd like to read them, if you wanted to share.

Youre right. He didn't inherit his money.

Come on, that's stupid. Almost Query-class stupid.

Gates was born into an upper class family, private prep school, Harvard, etc.

Arguably the reason he was so successful was the fact that his mother served on the same charity board of directors as the CEO of IBM and was able to get her son an audience with him back in the fledgling days of PCs.
