Zen stared at her personal nightmare. She shook her head. She had thought the newspaper was a hoax and that her father had sent for her. She still refused to believe that she had been buried and had a memorial service. She stared at the hatch on the tank and took a step backwards. She took another and another and was acting on instinct. She grabbed the neck of a camel, swung up, and was riding away at a fast trot. She kept glancing back expecting to hear gunfire, a blast from the tank, or the sound of a knife whooshing through the air, but nothing. He just stayed there looking at her with a mixture of curiosity and pleasure.
Zen was able to control the beast into going faster. She used to ride horses back home and a camel was the same plus a few extra humps. Zen wasn't sure where she was going, but she didn't care. She wasn't running to any more lone caravans. She learned that lesson. She didn't need men anymore. She was going to go home by herself. She could make it.
The sun baked her and as the sun slowly set she found out that night was cold as hell. It was about freezing when she could see the sparkles of a city ahead. Zen urged the camel faster and faster as she started to shake harder and harder. It was the sound of the camels hooves on pavement that made Zen realize she had made it to a city. Zen fell off the camel and into the first shop.
No one would help her. She looked dirty and she had no money. The few who spoke English wouldn't even give her the time of day. Zen tried to explain who she was, but she kept hearing the searing pain that Zen was dead. It didn't sink in until she was looking at a tv and saw her father and a woman Zen had met only once or twice, but he was getting married. The newscaster was wondering if her father was moving so quickly to get married after Zen's death to ease his pain that she was dead. That meant he wasn't going to help her. That meant he had left her to die. That meant he had given up on her.
Zen was leaning against a wall crying, hungry, thirsty, cold, and wondering what she was going to do next. That's when she was hit. She fell to the stone ground and looked up seeing 3 men. Fuck! What was it with the men in this country?!
Zen did her best. She had managed to scratch and bloody all of them, but they were stronger and she was pretty beaten up. Her face was slowly swelling and one eye wouldn't happen. She stood up on wobbly feet and she heard them say something in that language she didn't understand, but from his look and tone she understood that he thought she was crazy for getting back up.
Zen took a swing, missed, and fell to her knees. She could hear the sound of flesh on flesh and when she looked up Nightmare was there. He still had that mixed look on his face. Before he could speak she spoke. "Teach me to be like you. Teach me to fight and I'll go with you, yes?"
