Maybe I should just post my photos and not try to explain them. 
I am playing with some (new to me) software called Paint.Net or PdN. Community developed freeware for Windows. Lots of different plug-ins to play with.
Here I am, in socks, processed with Paint.Net and using the "Laplacian Pyramid Effect" plug-in.
