Since there is a character limitation to a posting, the following three postings is my complete first offering.
On August 16, I submitted for publication my latest novel. It consisted of 44 chapters totaling 307K words. Needless to say, it was an extensive undertaking taking up about ten months of my writing effort. Within forty-eight hours all 44 chapters were sent back with their typical rejection notice citing their artful justification: “Was there an underage (under 18 years old) sexual relationship in my story?” Now there were no descriptions of underage sex in the vast majority of the chapters. I’m assuming they concentrated on initial chapters wherein they deemed there occurred descriptions of underage sex. Thus once that issue was cleared up the whole novel could appear chronologically. I was OK with that strategy.
My new novel is a sequel to a previous novel titled simply “Vivian Laaning”. In my new novel Vivian along with her five month old baby, named Maia are vacationing in Estonia, one of the Baltic states east of Sweden and south of Finland, and quite close to Saint Petersburg, Russia. Vivian discovered a distant blood relative who invited her to stay at their residence for the remainder of her vacation. During her stay Eino Tarvas, a dairy farmer also a relative of the host couple, came to visit as he came to Tallinn (capital city of Estonia) for three days to negotiate a farm improvement loan.
Since Vivian had grown up in Wisconsin on a dairy farm, there was a commonality between Eino and her. They hit it off so well in their initial conversation that he invited her to dinner at a fine restaurant. The host couple volunteered to babysit Maia, but Vivian declined as she did not wish to overburden her hosts unduly. Vivian had a portable bed that could be easily transported on her back, but would unfold into an adequate bed which could be placed anywhere.
The meal was quite a success and the attraction to each other was electric. So much so that at the end of the dinner Eino proposes she along with her baby accompany him to his hotel room. Vivian agrees with the caveat of advising her host that she and Maia would not return for the night.
When they entered the hotel room baby Maia starts crying obviously wanting nourishment. So Vivian undresses to complete nudity in preparation to breast feed her baby, while Eino, ever the gentleman, picks up Maia to clean her up and change her diaper. Then he hands the baby over to the now naked Vivian. As Vivian proceeds to nurse Maia, Eino was simultaneously performing cunnilingus on Vivian. After the breast feeding was completed, Vivian burped Maia and handed her back to Eino to place the baby in her portal bed. Thereafter the couple engaged in several bouts of sexual activity throughout that night.
Now admittedly I was a little apprehensive in describing the oral sex action on the breast feeding mother and sensed there might be some opposition to it. However I was emboldened in that in two other stories I had submitted previously, one published three years ago and the other published eleven years ago, such a scene i.e. oral sex while breast feeding was included as part of the narrative. The only difference was the sexual partner for each of those breast feeding mothers were women; not that, that makes any real difference.
As a result I challenged the rejection by emphatically asserting that my novel contains no descriptions of underage sexual activity and should be published as is. The new rejection came with a comprehensive description of what is considered underage sexual activity:
“This includes but is not limited to talking explicitly about sex, voyeurism, exhibitionism, fantasizing, masturbation, and graphic sexualized descriptions, in addition to actual sexual intercourse. This also includes explicit past remembrances, descriptions of an underage person’s body/physical development and/or the reaction of other people to it; references to people under the age of 18 “playing doctor” or “sex education”, and any similar situations.”
Quite a list indeed, most likely drafted by an attorney hired by Literotica to forestall any allegations of dissembling child pornography. IMHO I think that definition is going too far. Logically it would mean a sentence like “my teenage daughter is listening to rap music” would be considered underage sexual activity. Lest you think I’m exaggerating, in my previous novel, “Ingrid’s Dark Secret Passion” I had written that my heroine a concert pianist at the age of sixteen absolutely loved a certain piece of music. She wasn’t sure why but believed in her mind there was a sexual component to the reason she loved the music. That was considered a sexual activity fitting in the parameters of the expanded definition.
That was not all, as later on in that same novel my heroine now twenty-two years of age in a conversation said “I haven’t had to worry about getting pregnant since I was fitted for an IUD since I was sixteen years of age. That was deemed an underage sexual activity. Remarkably in my previous novel titled “Navy Nurse” I had described a scenario where the mother of two teenage daughters also had compelled them to be fitted with an IUD right after experiencing their first menses. Incidentally, when the doctor protests the daughter surely was too young to consider the procedure the mother replies, “You can never be sure about these things and I want to be sure.” That scene at the time was accepted without any challenge.
Literotica seems to believe their guideline, i.e. “No sexual activity involving underage persons will be considered”, is clear and concise. In fact when they reject a story they don’t cite the particular part of the text that has violated the guideline. The hint is there for you to decipher what is a no no and it is up to you to rectify the apparent violation. As my examples show, the guideline is not so clear and concise but is subject to capricious and inconsistent application of their rules.
Consequently, I replied to their clarifying rejection to the effect that even their guideline and expanded definition of underage sex involvement must imply that for underage sexual activity to occur the underage person must be involved i.e. participates in the sexual activity. In my novel the only underage person is a five month old baby. It is a given that the baby Maia, could not possibly think, fantasize or even be aware of the sexual activity occurring around her. All that baby Maia is actually doing is sucking on her mother’s nipple not for sexual gratification, but simply to receive nourishment from her mother’s milk. And it goes without saying that in my novel there is no description of any adult sexually abusing baby Maia.
I even followed the suggestion contained in their rejection notice that I ought to contact a volunteer editor for assistance in rectifying the perceived guideline violation. I actually did contact two listed volunteers for their input on the first three chapters which presumably was the basis of Literotica’s rejection. They each agreed that my story should not be rejected on the grounds of underage sexual activity basis as there was simply no descriptions of underage sex activity.
Informing Literotica of that fact got me nowhere. I soon realized I was not going to get away this time around with a description of my heroine receiving cunnilingus while simultaneously nursing her baby. So I amended the text to remove all such descriptions and resubmitted the entire novel. To my dismay within a day they sent back again all 44 chapters by way of total rejection.
