Baby Yoda Gives Trump "the finger"

Baby Yoda knows an Evil Presence when he senses one.

The Pentagon has ordered Stars and Stripes to shut down for no good reason
was the actual title of Kathy Kiely’s piece in today’s Stars & Stripes.

Just yesterday they published an Associated Press story entitled-
Report claims Trump disparaged US war dead as ‘losers,’ 'suckers’.

Such reports have had the Stars & Stripes, a venerable publication since 1861
and in Donald Trump’s crosshairs almost his entire presidency. I’m almost
never shocked at the depths that Trump will stoop too but this really is
beyond the pale.

Back in February the Stars and Stripes was notified their funding would be cut in 2021

Their editorial independence from Pentagon oversight proving too much to bear for Trump.
One assumes the sudden shutdown was related to the coming election, when all dissent must
be squashed beforehand.

Outcry as Pentagon orders Stars and Stripes newspaper to shut down

A bipartisan group of 15 senators urged Defense Secretary Mark Esper in a letter
Wednesday to maintain support for Stars and Stripes, which could be forced to stop
publishing by the end of the month without Defense Department funding.

Under a continuing resolution, the senators wrote, the Pentagon has “a legal obligation
… to not act on a termination of a program until a full-year appropriations bill is enacted.”
Eliminating funds for Stripes before an appropriations bills is passed, they wrote “would
preempt the funding prerogatives of Congress.”

Esper moved to strip Stars and Stripes of funding after a defense-wide review of
Pentagon spending practices. He told reporters in February that the money would
be used for “higher-priority issues,” like purchasing modern weapons.

Stars and Stripes produces daily newspapers for U.S. military troops around the world
and the news website stripes dot com, which is updated with news 24 hours per day,
seven days per week, free of editorial oversight from the Pentagon.

Pentagon Orders ‘Stars And Stripes’ Shutdown As White House Seeks 159-Year-Old
Newspaper’s Defunding: Report

Spetember 4,2020

USA Today contributor Kathy Kiely cited a recent Pentagon memo that ordered the Stars
and Stripes publisher to present a plan by September 15 for the dissolution of the newspaper
both print and online, and a “specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space
worldwide.” The memo, written by Col. Paul Haverstick Jr., says the “last newspaper
publication (in all forms) will be September 30, 2020.”

The news comes as Trump is denying a report in The Atlantic that the president has
called U.S. troops killed in battle “losers” and “suckers,” sought to prevent disabled
veterans from taking part in parades because “nobody wants to see that” and denigrated
John McCain after the senator and Vietnam War hero’s death. The report, as well as
Trump’s denials, has been picked up by the military newspaper.

Trump denies reports that he disparaged US war dead as 'losers,' 'suckers'

The Atlantic’s editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg maintained he heard of the alleged
comments from “four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day,”
but he did not name them.

The defense officials said Trump made the comments as he begged off visiting the
cemetery outside Paris during a meeting following his presidential daily briefing
on the morning of Nov. 10, 2018.

Staffers from the National Security Council and the Secret Service told Trump that
rainy weather made helicopter travel to the cemetery risky, but they could drive there
Trump responded by saying he didn’t want to visit the cemetery because it was
“filled with losers,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity
because the official was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

AP said a senior Defense Department official who claimed firsthand knowledge
of events and a senior U.S. Marine Corps officer who was told about Trump’s
comments confirmed some of the remarks to the agency’s reporter.

Trump's New Foreign Broadcasting CEO Fires News Chiefs, Raising Fears Of Meddling

June 18, 2020

President Trump's pick to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media, Michael Pack

Michael Pack swiftly sidelined most of the agency's
senior leadership by stripping them of their authority.

He also fired the chiefs of the government-sponsored broadcast networks for foreign
audiences that his agency oversees, including Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty;
Radio Free Asia; Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which oversees
Radio and Television Martí; and Middle East Broadcasting Networks,
which runs Alhurra and Radio Sawa.

Pack dissolved advisory boards over each of the networks and placed his own aides
above them. He gave no reason for his actions other than his authority to do so,
according to two people with direct knowledge of the day's events.

The two top officials at Voice of America resigned days earlier in anticipation of

John Kelly’s son and “suckers”

A particularly poignant section deals with Trump visiting the gravesite
of his then-Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly’s son, who was killed
Afghanistan in 2010:

...sources with knowledge of this visit, Trump, while standing by Robert Kelly’s grave
urned directly to his father (Gen. Kelly) and said, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?”

Kelly (who declined to comment for this story) initially believed, people close to him
said, that Trump was making a ham-handed reference to the selflessness of America’s
all-volunteer force.

But later he came to realize that Trump simply does not understand non-transactional life choices.

Post reporters Carol D. Leonnig and Philip Rucker describe a meeting early in Trump’s
tenure, in which Mattis, then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and others attempted
to educate the new president on the American military’s role in the international order.
Trump grew agitated. “We should make money off of everything,” Trump said, referring
to American alliances and military bases around the globe.

“You’re all losers,” he told the assembled military personnel. “You don’t know how to win
anymore.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/09/04/trump-has-nothing-contempt-service-sacrifice/

“I want to win,” he said. “We don’t win any wars anymore . . . We spend $7 trillion,
everybody else got the oil and we’re not winning anymore.”

Trump by now was in one of his rages. He was so angry that he wasn’t taking many breaths.
All morning, he had been coarse and cavalier, but the next several things he bellowed went
beyond that description. They stunned nearly everyone in the room, and some vowed that
they would never repeat them. Indeed, they have not been reported until now.

“I wouldn’t go to war with you people,” Trump told the assembled brass.

Addressing the room, the commander in chief barked, “You’re a bunch of dopes and babies.”

For a president known for verbiage he euphemistically called “locker room talk,” this was
the gravest insult he could have delivered to these people, in this sacred space. The flag
officers in the room were shocked. Some staff began looking down at their papers,
rearranging folders, almost wishing themselves out of the room. A few considered
walking out. They tried not to reveal their revulsion on their faces, but questions
raced through their minds. “How does the commander in chief say that?” one thought.
“What would our worst adversaries think if they knew he said this?

Donald Trump simply lays bare how much of right-wing patriotism is pageantry
designed to wrap racist impulses in the flag.

"...the majority of Republicans have turned their backs on American values, the ones
our troops take an oath to protect, such as freedom, equality and the rule of law.
If protecting white supremacy requires abandoning bedrock American values,
such as the universal right to vote, so-called conservatives seem distressingly
eager to do so."

There’s literally nothing Trump can say or do to insult the troops, even those
who have died in service to the nation, that would cause his supporters to
turn away him.

A typically disingenuous statement from Arkansans for Transparency, issued through
the Hutchinson-Republican-dependent Gilmore Strategy Group:

Jonelle Fulmer and County Judge Joseph Wood, Co-Chairs of Arkansans for Transparency
issued the following statement:

“We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to keep these deceitful measures off the
November ballot. This is a huge victory for Arkansans in our continued fight against
billionaire-backed, out-of-state liberals who want nothing more than to wholly manipulate
our system of democracy.

There was nothing deceitful about either amendment, which were supported by hundreds
of thousands of Arkansans. The dishonest transparency group also took out-of-state money.

They court made no statement on the substance of the measures, only on a one-word
word choice. Transparency should dictate the group admit they want partisan,
backroom-dealmaking driven by special interests to continue to control elections
and the legislature in Arkansas.

Wonkette's eye settles on Nora Dannehy

Nora Dannehy Just Gave Emmet Sullivan the Evidence of Extreme Abuse
to Sentence Mike Flynn

September 12, 2020

Bill Barr himself has made a connection -
between the timing of the Durham probe and his decision to appoint Jeffrey Jensen to invent
an excuse to dismiss the prosecution/ against Mike Flynn.

Nora Dannehy's resignation makes that a lot more problematic.

The Hartford Courant story breaking the news provides a one detail explaining why.

First, perhaps to explain the non-political aspect of why Dannehy quit, the report describes
that she was told the assignment would take six months to a year when she first came back
in March 2019.

Dannehy was told to expect an assignment of from six months to a year when she agreed
to join Durham’s team in Washington, colleagues said. The work has taken far longer
than expected, in part because of complications caused by the corona virus pandemic.
In the meantime, team members –
some of whom are current or former federal investigators or prosecutors with homes
in Connecticut – have been working long hours in Washington under pressure to
produce results, associates said.

That would have put whatever pre-determined conclusion Billy Barr expected between
September 2019 and March 2020. Barr presumed he’d get that outcome, then, by the
time around February 1 when he appointed Jeffrey Jensen — to review the Flynn
prosecution and come up with some excuse to dismiss it.

Yesterday, Dannehy made it clear that the results of the Durham inquiry have also been pre-determined.

(Though I half wonder whether the Durham team reviewed Peter Strzok’s book, found
ready explanations to questions that neither HJC/OGR nor SSCI bothered to ask about
the investigation — most likely about how the team chose four targets — and realized
they were chasing hoaxes invented by Fox News.)

Wonkette's observation-

September 14, 2020

In case we hadn't all grokked that Bill Barr's pal US Attorney John Durham is cooking up
some hinky shit for an October surprise, the Hartford Courant reported Friday that Durham's
lead investigator Nora Dannehy just noped out rather than be associated with a political hit job.

Federal prosecutor Nora Dannehy, a top aide to U.S. Attorney John H. Durham in his
Russia investigation, has quietly resigned from the U.S. Justice Department probe -
at least partly out of concern that the investigative team is being pressed for political
reasons to produce a report before its work is done, colleagues said.

Last year Durham recruited Dannehy, a Justice Department alum who managed
politically sensitive investigations for both the Bush and Obama administrations,
to run the investigation. As the New York Times points out, in 2010 Dannehy authored
a report saying that, "[P]ressuring a prosecutor to indict a case more quickly to affect the
outcome of an upcoming election could be a corrupt attempt to influence the prosecution
in violation of the obstruction of justice statute.

The same reasoning could apply to pressuring a prosecutor to take partisan political
considerations into account in his charging decisions."

And now she's leaving, before the job is done, without even the fig leaf of excusing herself
to spend more time with the family while thanking Holy Father Trump for the privilege
allowing her to serve. Something's rotten in the state of Connecticut!

Former Top Pence Aide Says Trump Saw Silver Lining on Covid:

‘I Don’t Have to Shake Hands With These Disgusting People’

Sep 17th, 2020

The aide, Olivia Troye, left the White House last month, and was serving as
Pence’s top aide on the Covid response from the beginning of the outbreak
last winter.

When we were in a task force meeting, the president said:
‘Maybe this Covid thing is a good thing. I don’t like shaking hands with people.
I don’t have to shake hands with these disgusting people.’ Those disgusting people
are the same people that he claims to care about.

Jake Tapper said that CNN reached out for comment from the White House and got back
a response from an unnamed senior White House official, who vehemently denied
Troye’s account about Trump insulting his supporters as “disgusting.”
