I saw a link on someone else's profile for "Buy me a Coffee", so I thought that I would check it out. After creating a page on the site, I added a link to my account profile yesterday and have already received $25 in donations from generous fans of my stories here.

That's more than a lot of people make in a month on Amazon.

I’ve thought of using Patreon or a similar service to help write my stories but then, well, people might feel entitled to make me write commissions and fanfic isn’t supposed to be monetized anyway… glad you’re doing well. Congrats.

Congratulations, it's nice to paid for your work.

I looked at Buy Me a Coffee when I was considering monetizing (because of some previous sketchy interactions with Patreon), though I was put off when I saw this in their terms of service (emphasis mine):

- Don't post anything that is - is unlawful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, deceptive, fraudulent, invasive of another’s privacy, tortious, obscene, vulgar, pornographic, offensive, profane, contains or depicts nudity, contains or depicts sexual activity, or is otherwise inappropriate as determined by us in our sole discretion.

I guess it's up to their discretion what constitutes the above.

Heh. Guess I can't use them either for monetization then. Detailed sex scenes clearly aren't obscene or offensive to everyone- Thriller and Romance novels I've read are full of them. But fanfic legality is questionable and my stories are full of sexual activity and nudity. Most Lit stories are, actually! Far be it from me to violate that service's rules.

They have to mean, don't post that stuff on their site.

I do get that it says "their sole discretion" and it's possible they'd ding you for posting their link on a pornography site, but I honestly don't think it's intended the way you're taking it.

"To maintain this safe environment, we do not allow the promotion of certain types of content, including sexual, violent, or illegal content. This article provides further insight into the prohibited content on our platform."

"these guidelines apply to all aspects of Buy Me a Coffee including but not limited to imagery, text, video, audio, services, physical or digital items that are sold using Extras and Commissions, and links located anywhere on direct messages, galleries, profiles, posts, comments, commissions, extras, and any other location where content can be added. Links or references to Buy Me a Coffee from other web pages or profiles containing prohibited content and vice-versa are also subject to these guidelines."

"We never want our creators to use Buy Me a Coffee as a medium to make arrangements for any kind of prohibited content. Following is the list of content that is strictly prohibited in Buy Me a Coffee... Any and every form of adult content related to nudity, sexual acts, and pornography including literature, imagery, videos, and links to external sites or content containing such material."

This restriction comes from their payment provider: https://stripe.com/legal/restricted-businesses

"You must not use Stripe’s services for the following activities... Pornography and other mature audience content (including literature, imagery and other media) depicting nudity or explicit sexual acts"

In practice, BMaC will probably be happy to keep on taking their cut as long as they can ignore the content, but once somebody reports it, expect to lose the account. Most payment providers have similar restrictions somewhere in their fine print.

The irony being that if you Google "buy me a coffee erotica" a link to that Restricted Content article is among the first few ... surrounded by many links to erotic content creation right on their site.

I suppose the restriction is there as a CYA, as suggested, in case they get a complaint. But it doesn't look like they're actively cracking down. I'd still sit around wondering when my account would get shut off.

Probably something in the terms saying that you forfeit any $ in your account if it's terminated for breach of terms as well. So they'll wait until you have a nice chunk of change built up and put in a request to withdraw it. Then they'll terminate your account and keep it.

Yeah, that's how it normally seems to work. IDK how their payment schedule works, but I'd be looking to leave as little as possible in the account.

If that's how they feel, then fuck'em.

It's not really BMaC's fault. Most payment providers have similar restrictions, and the ones that do accept adult content will often charge a higher percentage of the money.

Processing money for adult content comes with legal challenges (gotta verify age), it makes you a target for people who want to shut down porn and would rather harass a dozen payment providers than a million freelance creators, and it's a bit riskier than the average transaction because there's a high rate of chargebacks. Those issues might not all apply for this particular service, but most payment providers find it easier just to say "no adult content" than set rules for every possible case individually.

My profile reads "I write primarily stories full of action, adventure, romance, and teasingly erotic heterosexual relationships."

While there is a link to my submissions on Literotica, I don't believe that anything I have posted on buymeacoffee actively "promotes" my stories here. I placed a link to my page on their site within my profile, which is where readers have found it to make donations to me.

There are more direct options for creating promotional items on their site, such as selling audio or video clips, links to a Patreon site, pay-for content, etc. but I don't use any of those.

Donations are reviewed to determine if they violate any of their terms or policies so we'll see if my donations pass mustard with them. I'll keep you posted.

The bit I'd be most worried about is "Links or references to Buy Me a Coffee from other web pages or profiles containing prohibited content and vice-versa are also subject to these guidelines" but hard to know how these things will be interpreted. Anyway, good luck with it, and do keep us posted on how it goes.
