Ben Barres, a ground-breaking neuroscientist and by all accounts all-round great guy, has died at 63.

Barres was transgender, and drew on his experiences to highlight sexism in academia:
"After he began living as a man in 1997, Barres overheard another scientist say, “Ben Barres gave a great seminar today, but his work is much better than his sister’s work.”
