I 'm watching this series on CNN. They're talking about the counter-cultural movement of the mid to late sixties. Drugs, sex and rock and roll. These are the people ultimately responsible for our current fucked up state. Pretty much the opposite of what they stood for. What happened?

Don't hold me to this, but as best I can tell pot and quaalude users became Democrats and speed freaks and LSD trippers became Republicans.

They started making some money and decided that Communism was not such a great idea after all.

Another home run for Hogan.

I don't know if you were trying to be funny but...That is pretty damned close to the way I saw that it happened!

Which explains a lot.

Actually lots of hippies sold out and became right wing conservatives and rich Liberal Democrats.

I know I have came a long way from a sit in protest shutting down our High School because of the heavy handed policies of the man.;)

Oppressive power you do not wield is something to rail against. Once they gained power themselves, they found that in their benevolent hands more power would be even better.

I blame Elvis.

With all those friggin hippies getting high non-stop, you'd think they would have at least legalized marijuana.

^^^^ best answer on the thread.

I think I can go along with both of these answers.

They took it all back in their heyday: sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. And now they're going to do the same thing with social security, because the first wave of the 'Love is all you need' crowd is now staring down both barrels of 'retirement'.

Ah the sixties. All a blur, have no real memories of them whatsoever.

But seeing I was born in 68 I will assume I just did a lot of pooping and crying.

I have always been sad that I was born too late to be a member of the Manson Cult.... :(

Truth is if you look back at what we were saying we wanted. How we felt the world should be run. I mean if you really think about it. We got exactly what we demanded back in the day.
I believe it was Walter Kelly' s Pogo character who said . We have met the enemy and it is us.
Becarful what you ask for.

The 60s here sucked. We're always late to the game.

To confirm my great grandparents stories I did a google search and found out that there's actually a historical society that keeps images from different time periods from my hometown! So that's actually really cool. I don't have any living relatives except my grandpa who was super little in the 60s (I think he was born in 65) so this shit is really interesting to me. It's like a time warp!

This one from 1960. Everbody wears fucking suits. So many well dressed folk.

A soapstone; I actually know what this is AND how to use it because my mamaw had one and it's still there. But being spoiled I just buy soap like a dumbass.

The annual big ass flood that still happens sometimes

This street now has literally nothing. That whole part of town is dead. So this picture is fucking freaky.

Prior to the ERA we still had child labor, which I remember my gramps talking about. His dad worked in the mines since he was 12, apparently. So... that's fucked up. Old people. Looking at you.

Sad balding men was apparently a big thing back in the day? The explanation for this pic says that they were at a church and they're actually praying? But they look like they're crying.

And then just some kids hanging out on the porch because "We used to play outside, we didn't have your fancy video games and magic phones and whatnot!"

So... yeah. Maybe that brings back some memories or something. I like stuff from the past, old pictures and whatnot. I particularly like the old beauty standard with the curvy chicks. We need to bring that back.

They got in charge and enacted their goofy ideas.

Yes, yes it was...

They dreamed a perfect world, one in which they would abrogate human nature.

Disagree. 100%.

I see you garnered some fans from this, but all the druggies went Democrat or died early.

It was the folk who tended towards church and family that discovered the Democrat Party had left them for the hip and cool new-age moral busybodies.

The real rot began when the college campus discovered Beatniks, pot and Communism in the 50s...

The 60s were just an extension of academic Communism and Socialism disguised as Middle-Class values, the idea that every hand out deserved a handout.
