After writing erotica of various kinks for the last few years I am returning to what I wrote years ago, Horror.

I am working on a horror novel that I am aiming to be a straight up mainstream piece.

But even in the mainstream there is sex/erotica. Many King books feature sex scenes, even some kinky ones. Michael Slade's books feature some out there fetish and kinks and in general there is sex to be found in horror and any other genre.

But of course unlike erotica the sex part of a story not the story and mainstream books do not portray it as long detailed and graphic as we do here.

So my issues is that the witches in this book by nature are passionate and outright lusty. It goes with the 'we have no rules' attitude and a lot of the teachings they follow, basically they are a 'if it feels good do it' crowd.

Which is fine and I have no issues plugging in some little sexy bits throughout the book.

Problem? I have made three attempts at a lesbian sex scene and it keeps getting away from me. I get caught up, bang away on the key board and think "This is hot" then I look at it and sigh. No, this is too much.

What I finally did was write it as I would here then spent a few hours trimming it down to what I feel is more acceptable to the genre and not a straight out of lit story. But it was a lot of extra work

I guess basically this is a "transition' and although thrilled with the rest of the material, I am struggling with separating vices.

Any tips on how to get the gears shifted or tell the muse, slow your roll?

LOL It's a bitch ain't it.

I go ahead and write the scenes and then come back and edit down or fade to black according to where it is going. I usually send my editor the full blown, no pun intended, version and my revised version. But then again, my editor is almost as big a pervert as i am. She did find me on a porn site after all. We usually find a happy medium between the two versions.

Nothing wrong with a story having erotic undertones. That'll keep most readers excited. Unless it's mainstream erotica, incorporating pages after pages of sweaty action isn't a good idea. Wrapping it up in 100/200 words would be alright, I think.

Try focussing more on their thoughts/feelings instead of the act itself. Worked for me when I wanted to avoid a lengthy scene and wanted to advance the plot at the same time.

I got to the point on my last novel where I was virtually screaming at my laptop, 'Will you two just bloody stop shagging! I need to advance your story, but you've just jumped into the sodding bed again!'
My current novel needs more shagging. More of everything, in fact.

Yeah, I did do that, but it turns into extra work which I was hoping to avoid. I tried having the wife help, but as I was reading the too long piece which she was supposed to be telling me "No, cut that," turned into her going "Ohhh, then what?"

On the plus side the full version with name swaps could be placed in an erotic piece down the line.

I waste nothing:D

Not news to any Buffy fans (and yes, I am one) but the preferred term is Wiccans, which instantly (to my mind) conjures up images of Willow getting it on with Amber rather than the warty-old-hags depicted by traditional folklore.

These aren't Wiccans, but they are far from warty hags. They also have BDSM style inclinations. Those I have no issue with keeping to referencing and hinting at rather than showing.

They're not much in the way of 'spell casters' either. They are a family whose power has a specific origin and was granted to them by a prince of hell who had fallen in love with one of their ancestors to be able to protect herself from torch bearing christian scum.

I'm pretty sure Dark Willow could have gone for some major BDSM!

Imagine Dark Willow getting it on with bad-girl Faith, oh my....

Willow:
Oh my; the lovely and competent Allison Hannigan. [?]

To my mind, Ms carpenter did nothing to advance the stories; at all.
She was just a bit of glamour.
It was at this point I switched off.

One for fans of Charisma Carpenter and BDSM Bound (2015)

But it has a Baldwin in it. That is beyond a boner killer.

I love the "no grey, just black and white" dig.

But hey it has movie night potential fro me and the wife. She likes sleazy, racy non porno movies.

8mm 2 was bad(and totally unrelated to the first) in the way of an actual movie, but had plenty of sleazy heat

I didn't watch the show too much, but my impression was she was supposed to be annoying, she was the hot 'popular' girl.

I felt the same of "Angel" to this day(because he has had a hell of a career on Bones) my sister says "he can't act, but goddamn he's pretty"and most women agree.

I approach this by writing it both ways. I let it all out in what can be a short story/vignette for posting here and then tone it down for the corresponding scene in the mainstream novel.

Sure but you wont do any of it.

I think to go mainstream and not come across as a Lit story, the sex, regardless if it's lesbian or not, has to be more suggestive than blatantly written out in description, leaving nothing to the imagination.

It's getting out of what to write as outright wank and spank and how to write it as suggestive wank and spank. Key power words do all the work and just need to be put in the right places to make it all gel.

yeah, I'm worrying about this at the moment too, so far *the only stuff* I've ever written is schmaltzy romantic erotica.

For NaNoWriMo I'm going to attempt to write the first part of a dystopian young adult sci-fi trilogy, I'm more of a plotter than a panster so I'm not worried about my characters falling into bed with each other but I'm scared all my main characters are going to exchanging meaningful glances and blushing all over the place.

Right, pretty much what TX Rad says as well.

So the answer seems to be let it loose, then take the steps to trim it down.

I was considering putting the first part of this-tweaked to stand alone- in the Halloween contests for some feedback so I can use the full 'lit style' scene here.

Nano is coming? I think I'll pass this time I did it in 2012/13 and did he summer camp last year and this year.

What if you approached it as if you were writing a scene for an R-rated movie? The passion is there, but the gyno exam isn't.
