Maybe I'm stupid? Ok, I'll say it - I'm stupid.
YouTube messaging is complete shite and I've just found six months worth of messages and PMs. These are never flagged up with a RED notifications. Even the ones that do get a RED number up by the grey bell icon don't link properly to the actual message but just replay the video you've already seen, damn it.
Google, You Tube, Hangouts, Circles, CIA - there all one damned outfit so why not one place for all your messages?

How to link all the Google Inc web of messages into one place?

you can disable message sharing on your profile page. you can also choose to be on youtube/google + as "incognito"

I should explain the reason for my rant was that I found a vlog from a guy who was playing Seven Years on guitar and I could see his fingering. So I commented, thanking him and saying it would be a real help. That was four months ago. What I didn't see, courtesy of the invisi-message service, was that he'd taken my comment and written out the entire tabs set for the song!! I've now messaged him, thanking him and apologising for not doing so sooner - I felt such a heel.
