I like to think you can tell something about someone by their sense of humor.

List your all-time dozen favorite comedies, in order or not, with commentary or not. Or if you don't like comedies, pipe up with that, too.

Loser. :D

Mine, in some sort of approximate order:

1. The Naked Gun series (yeah, it's cheating. Sue me. My thread.)
2. Manhattan
3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

5. Monty Python's Life of Brian
6. There's Something About Mary
7. The Big Lebowski
8. Cold Comfort Farm
9. This is Spinal Tap
10. The Royal Tenenbaums
11. Groundhog Day
12. Airplane

Cold Comfort Farm is absolutely adorable.
I suck at making this kind of list unfortunately, so I´ll have to think before I answer.

Stay classy, San Diego!

The only thing better than comedies are action flicks.

7. Garden State

Oh God. Anchorman. Pure awesomeness. That must be no. 13. Love Clerks, and I Love You, Man, too. I keep hearing good things about Hot Fuzz. I need to see that.

Hot Fuzz is hilarious! I realize to some this might be considered blasphemy, but I like it better than 'Shaun of the Dead'!!

Young Frankenstein
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Dodgeball
Shaun of the Dead
Best in Show
Anchorman
Groundhog Day
Napoleon Dynamite
Knocked Up
Role Models
40 Year Old Virgin

The last two aren't exactly comedies, but I LOVE them! They make me smile every time:
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Rocky Horror Picture Show

I find I quote at least one of these movies daily.

(I was listening to Queen today, specifically "I'm in Love with my Car". I thought how easily that could have been sung by Spinal Tap.)

Since Hot Fuzz was already represented, I went with Shaun of the Dead. Either one is genius.

This is far from a complete list

The original "The Inlaws"
(Serpentine, serpentine!)
The original "We're no Angels" with Humphrey Bogart
(Adolf!)
"Oh Brother, Where art thou?"
"Blazing Saddles"
(The campfire scene is priceless)
"Bringing Up Baby"
(Great chemistry between Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant)
"Topper"
(Again Cary Grant is great)
The Fockers movies
(you wouldn't think so but Robert De Niro is great in comedy)
"National Lampoon's Animal House"
(Food Fight!)
"National Lampoon's Vacation"
(Wally World!)
Anything Monty Python's Flying Circus
(It's!)
Any of the Bing Crosby/Bob Hope "Road" Shows
(Such dry but intelligent humor, you almost miss it)
"Airplane"
(Don't call me Shirley)

I completely forgot about Raising Arizona!!!

Dammit...this list will never end

So, at what point are you going to grace us with your vaunted analysis of us by virtue of our having listed a dozen movies that stood out in our fading memories long enough for us to type the titles?

Dunno if I can think of 12 when I'm pre-coffee, but I'll start

Hot Fuzz
Zoolander
Zombieland
The Hangover
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Wayne's World
Caddyshack
The Naked Gun
Office Space
Beverley Hills Cop
Happy Gilmore
Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Well there we go. Not bad.

Modern Times
The Big Lebowski
Dr. Strangelove
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Anchorman
Blazing Saddles
Shaun of the Dead
Whatever Works
Airplane
Some Like It Hot
The Princess Bride
American Psycho

well i definitely can't come up with twelve, as i'm not a super-huge comedy fan, but i do dig the classics (as defined by me of course, lol):

Stir Crazy
Coming to America
Blazing Saddles

those are definitely top three. the rest are in no particular order:

Kung Fu Hustle
The Seven Year Itch
The Waterboy
Carwash
40-Year-Old Virgin
O Brother, Where Art Thou

Monty Python - Holy Grail
Space Balls
Monty Python - Life of Brian
Airplane
Top Secret

Blazing Saddles
Robin Hood Men in Tights
Shaun of the Dean

Here are mine and they're in no particular order.

Young Frankenstein

Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Shawn of the Dead
Aladdin - Disney Version (I love Robin Williams as the Genie)
The Birdcage
To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar
Tootsie
The Pink Panther (the Peter Sellers version)
Ghost Busters

10) Blades of Glory
11) Happy Gilmore
12) Me, Myself and Irene

You know, I like Meet the Parents a lot too. A lot of people, for reasons I can sort of understand, but not share, despise Ben Stiller. But for sheer discomfort in social situations, he is on my All-Star team.

In no particular order:
Oh Brother, Where art thou?
Holy grail
Life of Brian
Some like it hot
Singing in the rain
The Sting
Choke
Fish called Wanda
Modern Times or The Dictator
Dr Strangelove
1941
The Philadelphia Story

I'm surprised how many people listed "Oh Brother." I guess I didn't really think of it as a comedy, although it is. I love it when George Clooney goes batshit because he can't get Dapper Dan hair cream. :D Fish Called Wanda. I need to watch that again soon.

7. Garden State
8. Sunshine Cleaning
9. Practical Magic

12. The Princess Bride

Oh GOD. Princess Bride. So GOOD. Never seen the IT Crowd, or Timer. But I must.

Young Frankenstein
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Dodgeball
Shaun of the Dead
Best in Show
Anchorman
Groundhog Day
Napoleon Dynamite
Knocked Up
Role Models
40 Year Old Virgin

Yeah, Napoleon Dynamite is eminently quotable: "TINA! Come get some food, you fat lard!!" My favorite part of Knocked Up is when Seth Rogen (whom I know you're partial to) wants to forgo the fancy, expensive crib. ("There's one in the alley behind my house! We could just rub some Purel on it!")

You and MWY have classic tastes. Bringing Up Baby is great. Everyone just loves Blazing Saddles, and for some reason it never grabbed me.

I completely forgot about Raising Arizona!!!

Dammit...this list will never end

I love Raising Arizona, but only the first half. Like Office Space, it reaches a peak and then seems to look for a reason to continue.

Dunno if I can think of 12 when I'm pre-coffee, but I'll start

Hot Fuzz
Zoolander
Zombieland
The Hangover
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Wayne's World
Caddyshack
The Naked Gun
Office Space
Beverley Hills Cop
Happy Gilmore
Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Well there we go. Not bad.

I just watched Zombieland about eight times, cause I'm in a Zombie phase. Delightful. The Twinkies, dear god, the Twinkies. Isn't the Walk-Off in Zoolander the best?

Modern Times
The Big Lebowski
Dr. Strangelove
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Anchorman
Blazing Saddles
Shaun of the Dead
Whatever Works
Airplane
Some Like It Hot
The Princess Bride
American Psycho

Oh yes. American Psycho. Knee-slapping, pee-in-your-pants funny. A romp.

Is Kung Fu Hustle good? I've never seen it.

Monty Python - Holy Grail
Space Balls
Monty Python - Life of Brian
Airplane
Top Secret
Mars Attack
Blades of Glory
Month Python - Meaning of Life
Hot Fuzz
Blazing Saddles
Robin Hood Men in Tights
Shaun of the Dean

Knew you'd chime in with silliness. :)

Here are mine and they're in no particular order.

Young Frankenstein
Airplane
Carry On movies (except their Christmas one...it was dire !)
Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Shawn of the Dead

The Birdcage
To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar
Tootsie
The Pink Panther (the Peter Sellers version)
Ghost Busters

Austin Powers. Hard not to TALK like that and annoy the hell out of everyone after viewing.

So, at what point are you going to grace us with your vaunted analysis of us by virtue of our having listed a dozen movies that stood out in our fading memories long enough for us to type the titles?

Your list proves that you are a Pisces, with a yen for Brazilian food.

LOVE Duck Soup.

The Twinkies! And the duelling banjo scene. And it's Bill fucking Murray!

I did rather love the Walk Off. Shut your mouth Billy Zane!

God, everybody's list stirs more memories. "Son of Flubber", "The Absent Minded Professor" or any of those Movies with Fred MacMurray and crew from Disney. Sometimes silly, but great, clean fun. Another I forgot that was already mentioned is "This is Spinal Tap". This classic is even better when you realize what these guys really look like.

It is difficult to leave out some great movies, because they aren't really comedies, but involve situations between actors that just click in a funny way. "The Whole Nine Yards" and "Pulp Fiction" are like that. And "My Cousin Vinny" is near and dear to my heart...I am hopelessly in love with Marisa Tomei.

I forgot about "This is Spinal Tap." I amend my list (but I ain't removing anything, so count me lucky 13).

Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

My Top 12

Pretty close to in order

1. The Big Lebowski
2. Blazing Saddles
3. Christmas Vacation
4. Caddyshack
5. Happy Gilmore
6. Goin' South
7. The Hangover
8. Zombieland
9. Super Troopers
10. Me, Myself, and Irene
11. Liar Liar
12. McLintock!

Yup, I agree with the bolded part. Pulp Fiction is a good example and I laughed a lot when From Dusk Till Dawn changed from a perfectly normal movie to this really strange vampire story but it doesn´t feel quite right to call them comedies either. Fargo is another example.
