As some of you might have spotted, I'm interested in planets. Our own, near the Sun; distant ones around other stars; and the imaginary ones we use as settings for our fiction.
Individual planets have their own characteristics and there's plenty of variety available on most of them, but if you were to design your own perfect world how would it differ from Earth?
For me, it would have more equitable seasons - so less axial tilt and a more circular orbit - and a slightly longer day for more sleep. Maybe shorter years, so to keep the temperature similar we have to cool and redden the sun a little and move the planet closer.
Slightly lower gravity would be nice too, so we shrink things a little - not too much or we start to lose atmosphere. That also has the byproduct of making mountains that can reach higher. We still have a moon, but now our gravity is lower it has to come a bit closer to keep the tides similar. It looks even bigger in the sky and months aren't as long. Not only in absolute terms, but also because of our lengthened day.
There are other subtle side-effects, but they'll just make our musings too complex. Now you've seen how my ideal world is slightly different from Earth, why don't you suggest how your perfect planet would look?
