Your favorite 🤓 Nerd Alert 🤓

I do enjoy Dragonball.
I think my favorite is the Android/Cell Saga.
Gohan taking over felt like a natural peak of the story arc.
I do like the Buu Saga, and Mr. Satan almost saving the world through his buffoonery was amusing, but Gohan got nerfed badly.
The nerfing felt even worse when you realize Goku probably could have killed Fat Buu easily if not for his time limit.

I’m not really into DB lore, the five-to-ten show power up sequences got annoying to me, but I do love the idea of a public championship fight being utterly subverted by hidden masters working in plain sight but too fast, too skillfully to be noticed, and a relative scrub ‘winning’

Never got into Dragon Ball, so I have not much to add to this conversation. Just wanted to poke my head in and say that I love this thread, though.

So, last night I was walking my son through a book report and he had to discuss rising action, conflict, climax, and resolution. I haven’t read the book and couldn’t help much and he needed to know what each breakdown meant.

The best way I could get him to understand was to reference Dragon Ball Z. His favorite storyline is the Cell Saga and his face when we went through every stage 😆 All of a sudden he knew how to answer every question in relation to the book!

It got my nerd going and now I’m wondering, if you like DBZ, what is your favorite Saga?

Mine is the Majin Buu Saga. It was just more fun with Mr. Sayan’s silliness and Buu turning everyone into chocolate and c’mon…“Bibidi” “Babidi” and “Buu”? It’s also when the fusion technique is introduced and I love Gotenks 🥰

Plus Vegeta getting all emotional! 🥹
I have watched a few episodes and can say, with passion, "Kamehameha!" I'm not a megafan, but I think it's fun. My favorite character is Vegeta.

I've heard that Akira Toriyama himself (the original author) never really liked Vegeta, but kept him around because fans did.
He grew to appreciate him and what his character brought to the story and Vegeta became one of his favorite characters. He has a way of making people like him 🥰

I have to admit I’ve never watched an episode of DBZ 🙈

It’s not for everyone and one play through was enough for me, honestly, but my son loves it enough that I’ve seen it more than that. The constant grunting and moaning during a power up…😐
You might enjoy the original Dragonball then.
It was written more of a comedy, and while still martial arts focused, it wasn't all power ups.
DBZ starts right around the shift from when it was comedy focused to action focused.

I’ve seen it from the beginning of DB to the end of DBZ and even the awful GT but none of the Super. I do enjoy DB a lot but the character development and storylines in Z are sooo good! Just wading through all the fluff and drawn out scenes 🙄

Dragonball Kai might help with that.
It's DBZ, but shorter.

Ok, so I’m a horrible thread hostess, but I’m pretty sure I let you guys know that from the get go. Maybe I hinted at it?

Anywho, I slacked hard and here comes @Whiskeyjack to reinspire (totally feed me prompt ideas 🤭)

One of his suggestions that I loved and am still working out my own response for…

Pick 4 fictional characters to plan a bank heist with, and who has what job? (brains, brawn, safecracker, getaway driver, etc.)

Brains: Bridget Jones

Safecracker: Pazuzu from Sisters

Muscle: Spencer in Jumanji

Get Away: Jack Trainer from Lost City

Popping in to say the following:
  • Definitely watch an abridged version of Dragon Ball. As someone that suffered through the OG DB/DBZ and all the filler episodes, there is absolutely no need to watch 10 episodes of Goku attempting to go SS.
  • I'm a slut for Vegeta, Prince of ALL Saiyans.
  • Cell and Frieza sagas are my faves (specifically, 2nd half of the Cell saga when he becomes Perfect Cell).

Brain: Rupert Giles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Yes, when it comes to breaking into things, there are some skill sets that may be useful -- like being a vampire. But Giles is one of the most creative, knowledgeable, and brilliant minds in the BuffyVerse. And he isn't mild-mannered. His Ripper phase is often just below the surface, and he can do ice-cold calculations, such as when he killed Ben after Glory had been defeated because Ben gave her the foothold to come back, and Giles knew Buffy -- a true hero -- wouldn't, and couldn't, comprehend that. Giles did, took that weight, and took it to his grave. Giles is the brains.

Wheelman: Miles, AKA "Baby" (Baby Driver)

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a song is worth so many more...

Defense Penetration: Clone Trooper CT-9902, AKA Tech (Star Wars: The Bad Batch)
Due to a genetic anomaly, CT-9902 had phenomenal data and technical analysis, so phenomenal that he was faster than most droids. He became a master at technical improvisation and defense penetration, thus his nickname, Tech. His modified Class II Clone Armor has an integrated computer of great sophistication, and locks -- physical, high-tech, puzzle, what have you -- were no match for him. Add to that, he is a fully trained commando and can hold his own in combat if necessary. And his out-of-the-box thinking would gibe well with Giles's. Also, this would give me a chance to bring him back from his fate. He died a hero, but I missed him. (I am a sap.)

The Face: Jamie Moriarty (Elementary)

TV's Elementary has Moriarty, a combination of Irene Adler and Professor James Moriarty. Able to instantly read any situation, lie convincingly to anyone (including the human lie detector Sherlock Homes), and talk her way out of any situation. She is a sociopath, but she as a character she has enough Irene Adler within her DNA to make her more controlled and dependable than most variations of this character. But I like the bad girls...

And, as we are criminals, I am breaking the rules for a fifth.

Wild Card: Professor River Song.

"Hello, sweetie!"

Brilliant, clever, fearless, and with a mind as twisty as a Gordian knot, she can take the place of anyone on here (or all of them, really. She is an exceptional thief.). Part as a brake or Moriarty, but everyone knows you sometimes need someone to play spoiler.
