So I'm just sitting here watching Miss Americana on Netflix.

"In this revealing documentary, Taylor Swift embraces her role as a songwriter and performer - and as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice."

To be honest? I'm not loving it.

I do, however, appreciate the way she processes and writes songs. The music.

It takes me back to my first guitar and writing songs of my own and practicing for hours and hours every single day. It's quite buzzy because my way of writing is very similar to hers.

Could I have been famous? Could I write about my exes? Hmm, lemme think abowdit...

Taylor Swift is the new breed if star/icon. She, like most of them, has a drive to be "noticed", which, coupled with her looks, puts her at the peak of her talents. The gigantic separation between these stars/icons and the "average person" is basically because the new breed of "average" looks up from their video console and drools.

In a word? Trolls.

This board is infested with them and they have zero self control and there are no repercussions for their conduct here or for their 1-bombing zeal on the story side of the board.

However, in the Lounge they at least have to ACT like they have a few manners. I only wish "the rules" for the lounge were enforced more rigorously and less tolerantly because even now the trolls have found the limits of Laurel's disinterest in her own property and flagrantly violate those "rules".

The other thing you've gone overboard about (again) has it's roots in the fact that you don't get it. This place is about Porn and SEX. If you don't like that stuff, don't come here. Alternatively, if you don't like that stuff and still want to come here for the other things, then stop complaining about it. THAT STUFF pays the bills around here.

Acting all moral over it totally misses the point that THAT STUFF is "legal" in most places (to a point) and that it's YOUR ideology that is out of touch with reality. The world runs on sex and money and there's a LOT WORSE out there than what Laurel allows on her MB. Things that are also "legal" depending on where they're at.

Abstinence as a public policy was done back in the early 1900's. It was a total failure. Not because people didn't care. It failed because we are people. Flawed and with needs and desires.

I restored this watch about a month ago. It's a "6 size" Elgin from the late 1800's. It has 11 jewels inside and the case is gold filled. For those who don't know, "6 size" is about 40mm diameter so it fits perfectly in that little pocket in your jeans you never use.

I also gave it away to someone who wears and enjoys it daily.

So, I am thinking I am creative with my singing. I used to be in choirs but now I hum all the time and sing in the shower. Just a footnote, I can sing the 50 United States in Alphabetical order. It was what I was known for on the family party scene.

I could play 9 different instruments very fluently. Ranging anywhere from the guitar to the oboe. Life happened and then went through a pretty shitty patch. My adeptnees for all those instruments has faded. I still play stringed instruments, but haven't played much in the last 4 years. Without the work and the practice, all the talent in the world, can't keep you technically proficient.

Time to shut up and start playing again. The hole that it once filled needs to be plugged.

More recent things I've done

I just finished restoring this and gave it away this morning.

It's a 3/0 sized Hampden Diadem made in approx 1911. It has 15 jewels inside and runs really sweet now. For those who don't know, the "size" is of the movement, not the case. A 3/0 size is 3 sizes smaller than a 0 (zero) size which is approx 25mm in diameter. The CASE on this Hampden is only 28mm in diameter. It's really tiny in there.

Decades ago (and I mean that literally) I received a letter from an editor in a newspaper chain advising me I was being considered for a weekly humorous column on rural family lifestyles. I'd won some column writing awards but never gave it much thought.
The letter was short on specifics, but the upshot was that my work could appear in several newspapers with big Lifestyles sections. I might even make an extra $50 a month, I figured, based on the little information provided.
I never told my wife about the letter, or anyone else. I had a lot of responsibilities then, and the idea of having to write something funny (not easy) every week was more that I was willing to take on.
The guy who sent the letter called the office while I was out. I never returned the call.
The last ten years I wrote columns maybe two of them were funny. It was a lot easier when you had two young kids and a huge dog.

No hidden talents and no pics to share. I used to bake all sorts of things and made candy. including hand painted chocolates. I sold these by word of mouth only. Also did all sorts of arts and crafts. Sold some of that stuff too, including jewelry, wreaths and Christmas ornaments.

I still can do these things but I just usually don't. I have diabetes now so don't make many sweets and don't want to have to replace all my candy molds. They got old and too brittle for use. Also, one can only have so much jewelry and so many geegaws around the house. But if I feel the urge to make something, I will.

Maybe you are famous? Google yourself. I know it's vain, but you can figure out if people say much about you. I have a pile of citations there, but it's all for work and only a couple for finishing ski tours.

I do okay making things out of wood. My kids teethed on a crib made of Alaskan birch, not because I was cheap, but that I didn't like what was available on the market in town. One year, all the women in the family got exotic hardwood framed mirrors for Christmas that I made. I got my mom's back after she passed an it's our mirror at the cabin. Speaking of, at the cabin I blended all the T&G cottonwood to bend around the corners so that the cuts were virtually invisible. Wood is just an easy material to deal with.

I write music I cannot play.
