I know this is on-topic, and I apologize for that, but is it okay to include Clint Eastwood in with "Classic" actors?

I'll pretty much watch anything he's in.

Not a bad director, either.

Slippery slope, my friend. Slippery slope.

Not a bad director, either.

Spike Lee said: “There were many African-Americans who survived that war and who were upset at Clint for not having one [in the films]. That was his version: the negro soldier did not exist."

But it stands to reason under that logic, right? A black man running for higher office, for instance, will come under the scrutiny of "the black race, on average, is inadequately educated to run the country"?

Slippery slope, my friend. Slippery slope.

Maybe for those who are incapable of evaluating on person at a time on their own merit.

I don't have that problem.

...you're too wary to make a point about this, other than to post a quote, aren't you?

Afraid you'll screw up?

For the most part they didn't exist in white units. To portray it differently would be incorrect.

...in which case, the aforementioned idea of the "black race, on average, is inadequately educated to run the country" is totally inconsequential in every scenario of indivdual merit. Rendering it useless.

You can't have it both ways. Sorry.

i don't know why you guys are arguing about john wayne. dude was a prick. i thought everyone knew that. also, he did some fucking horrible movies.

like the alamo. that movie is shit.

No logical thought there - as usual. If one was going to turn to control of the whole country over to one race then it should be the most educated one, no?

don't know. Don't care.
I only watch movies for what happens in the movies. What happens outside of them is none of my concern.

Basil Rathbone
Errol Flynn

I mentioned Basil to my daughter the other day - that he played a number of villains (the sheriff of Nottingham was one I seem to remember) and Sherlock Holmes too. She had no clue who I was talking about. He was known, but not a big name like Cary Grant.

I love TCM - they have commercial free classic movies playing all the time. Between TCM and HBO I often record 5 to 10 movies onto DVD a week - at least half of them classics.

I don't care for Flynn all that much - some of his roles I liked, but not all. I think he overacted a bit.

Is "Classic" defined as the 30's 40's and 50's?

Spencer Tracy
Vincent Price
Boris Karloff
Walter Brennan
Henry Fonda
Gene Kelly
Debbie Reynolds
Maureen O'Hara
Gabby Hayes
Robert Mitchum
Abbott & Costello
Gregory Peck

Actually, that would be Vintage.

Anything over 25 years would be a Classic, wouldn't it?

Then, my favorites would be-

Jack Nicholson
Clint Eastwood
Marty Feldman
Marlon Brando
Lee Marvin
Robert Duvall
Donald Sutherland
Gene Hackman
Steve McQueen
Tony Curtis
Peter Sellers
Sean Connery

Rathbone was perfect for the roles he did, as good a villain as he was a hero.

Of course Flynn overacted, that was the whole point. The roles he took pretty much required overacting. That's what made them fun.

Attempting to discredit without examples, or explanation. As usual.

My last comment stumped you.

I gave you an explanation. Can't read? The explanation I gave was fairly simple, I'm not sure I can simplify it any more, but I will try if it'll help.

A lot of those folks came from silent films where over acting was a requirement.

Go ahead and try. All I saw was an indirect response to a precise point (which I'll reiterate / re-state if necessary).
