Excuse me? Bums are the fly in the free market soup, because the free market creates them. The next bum you see could be your neighbor who lost his job and subsequently, his house; or the kid who went to Iraq to fight Bush's war and came back with head trauma; or your brother who got strung out on meth and couldn't get into a treatment program because of the two-year wait. Research on bums indicates that many of them are mentally challenged in one way or another. Do we treat them is if they were ill? Do we ignore them? Do we round them all up and gun them down, like Hitler in Germany?

The fact that bums are human can be upsetting, but ignoring them is not a solution. The libs know this, the cons...what do the cons do, besides make jokes about them? Oh, I remember now, they cut funding.

Sure, there's some down and outers among them, but you can tell them from the hardcore pro's, the ones who are eating expiration-date shrimp cocktail and onion dip from behind the dumpster at the Noon Hour Snack Food company and shitting in the grass by the expressway overpass. I still give them money, but I don't fool myself anymore that they're using it to get a haircut and new clothes.

I know the feeling. Once, in Cleveland, I was approached by an obviously homeless guy who claimed he had not eaten for days and needed money for food. Using my usual "anti-bum" response of "Tell you what.. there is a Subway up the street and I'll buy you a sandwhich"

His face lit up and and he could hardly talk... Watching him inhale that sub was a humbling experience.... funny how those stereotypes don't always fit.

With all the immodesty of a recognized great poster (no, NOT poser) I will claim that one too... at least the one I was most proud of even as it went totally unnoted...

The thread was about one of our own who was suffering from brusing on her legs and expressed annoyance about people asking if she was being abused by her husband.

I responded with something like....

"I do not know why anyone would assume bruising on your legs was the result of being abused by your husband.... unless you are married to a dwarf, I suppose."

Setting aside any unintended slight to little people... it remains my favorite.

I've done the research and prayed about it, and discovered that bumdom is a decent paying racket for the ambitious.

Panhndling in the street pays about $60 an hour, or more with a good location. The typical bum makes about $1 a minute.

I know a guy who collects disability, has a house, sells newspapers on the street, then pulls a shift as a panhandler after the papers are sold out.
