I've noticed that in a lot of stories women refer to their vaginas as a "cunt". I always thought that was a derogatory term and women didn't like it. Am I "old school" in my thinking? What do women like to call their sexual genitalia? Is it vagina, pussy, cunt, kittie or what? Additionally, which term inspires the more erotic, sexy tone or feeling in a story? As an aspiring author I'd be interested in knowing what women think and what men hear from their partners. Thanks!

If you read of a woman calling her pussy a "cunt", you're probably reading something written by a man.

"Cunnie," maybe. Not "cunt."

I intentionally avoid the use of the word. There probably are instances, possibly during dialog to express frustration, intense emotion, etc. that it could be used, I suppose. BDSM and non-consent stories are saturated with its use.

But, MathGirl, there are women writers that submit to Lit, (certainly not in the majority by any stretch of the imagination), that do, in fact, use that term in genres other than in BDSM and non-consent stories.

And I, for one, would be interested in what those women say about why they would use it.

It all depends on the context and 'naughty' level of the story or situation itself, for me. And what's asked, of course. ;)

In normal everyday speech, i have my pussy and my other pussy. Kitty is the cat's name - blame the kids for that one.

I don't. I don't write it that way, and I really don't enjoy reading it.

It may fit, however, depending on the story topic (rape stories or certain BDSM, for example). But in a context of "vanilla" loving couples having sex - nope. It is a turn-off rather than a turn-on.

So, what should you call it? Vagina can work, but only as a point of reference for me - once you get into the serious sex it sounds too clinical.

"I slid my hot throbbing cock into her tight vagina." That is less erotic for me.

I often use bits and pieces or adjectives to describe the entire scene - touched my clit, slid around my wetness, licked the little folds - etc. You don't always have to use the entire name every time.

I tend to use the term "pussy" when I write - that works works for me! (hope this helps?) :)

I refer to it as my "pussy"

when writing, I usually describe it as a pussy in descriptions.

In my nonconsent and BDSM stories I've used the word "cunt" because I find it a bit humiliating, and thrilling in a way. sort of like one partner calling the other a "bad girl/boy" or "slut" or "whore" or a combination "cum slut" or "cock whore" etc. <grin> I consider the word Cunt to be like that. It had it's places, but mostly should be reserved for those few occasions.

ps - never call your girlfriend's pussy a "cunt" unless you want your dick bitten off.

Dear PM,
I think the responses from women to this thread should give you a good idea how we feel about the word.

Possibly a representative sample, MG. Again, I agree.

But I'm interested in the comments from the women authors that do use that word.

guilty as charged

I have used cunt in my stories.

I have written stories without the word cunt.

I like the word cunt... it is more aggressive. It is more of an equal to 'cock'. There is an edginess to it that can be appropriate even in 'normal' sex.

This being said, I am currently going back through my most recently written story and removing all the 'cunt's. The tone of the original story is softer, so I am going to tone this one down. I am aware of people not liking the word, so I am trying to be sensitive to the audience.

I use the word "cunt" in my stories. (and yes, I am a female) Personally, I don't find the word all that upsetting or derogatory. If a man in real life says it in a demeaning way, yes. If another woman is trying to get in my face by using it, that pisses me off as well. In real life, in the height of passion, I love to hear the word - whether it refers to my actual genitalia or to me.

In my stories, I avoid using "cunt" unless it is part of dialogue. And yes, I use it outside of the BDSM and Non-consent categories. Typically during a point where passion is running high. I also have the woman occasionally refer to her genitalia as "cunt". But not in the telling of the story, and if I were to do a more romantic piece, I would probably leave it out.

But then, I do have a tendency to write more towards the male audience than the female.

Still, I've never quite figured out why such a little word causes so much disturbance.

Thanks to all for the replies so far. A little more background on my questions. I was reading a story in the Loving Wives category and two women were talking and one asked the other (paraphrasing here):
1st Woman: "Well what do you call it"
2nd Woman: "I call it my vagina"
1st: "What other names do you have for it."
2nd " I guess it's my cunt....".

It just didn't seem right to me. I asked myself "Do woman really talk like that to each other?" So I decided to find out. In the one story I've written I chose to use "pussy" partly because it didn't seem offensive. I can see where there might be times when you want a harder more aggressive edge to the story and a word like "cunt" can spark the visceral reaction you're seeking.

I'd still like to hear more views on this!

BTW I went back and checked; the story I mentioned above was written by a man.

Words are just that, words. It is the intent behind them. I use the word "cunt" in many of my stories. I don't take any offense from that word, unless it is used to refer to me as a person, as in "you're a cunt".

It's the same with the word "bitch" for me. It depends on the intent and meaning of the usage. My roomies and I call each other "bitch" quite often. We say it in an affectionate way to each other. None of us take offense at it. It's not said in a demeaning way.

Some people get really hung up on certain words because they have attached a specific meaning and use for it. I try to look at what people mean behind the words they say.

What's the difference between being told "you're a cunt" and "you're a pussy"? Different words, but same demeaning intent. Because of that, some people won't use "cunt", but will use "pussy" in their writings because they see one word as demeaning and the other isn't. Doesn't make sense to me.

"We have thoughts, but thoughts are fluid. You know. And, then we assign a word to a thought. And we're stuck with that word for that thought. So be careful with words. I like to think, yeah, the same words that hurt can heal. It's a matter of how you pick them." - George Carlin

"There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad Intentions. And words." - George Carlin

I am a guy, and my female characters use the word 'cunt'. That is not a slip-up. I am not trying to imitate a woman writer, but nor are my female characters just racks to hang all the relevant body parts at the right positions and angles for porn to ensue.

To me, the more worshipful a name you come up with for the female vagina, the more it seems the person herself has been forgotten. I write for myself about characters I can relate to.

Also, I grew up taking the word 'pussy' to mean vaguely that hairy spot on a woman. So sue me.

I personally use the word pussy in my writing, lends to a softer story line. The word cunt itself just has a harsh sound. To each his own. I guess its the stigma that has seemed to follow the word cunt; its rough, harsh, hard, and at times can be considered vulgar. Each word has its place in a story, in my opinion it would just depend on the tempo, mood, and setting of a story, whether written by male or female. My husband and I use pussy and cock in the heat of the moment which tends to add to our passion while vocalizing.

"Are you calling me a cunt?" - bad use of the word

"Hurry up and stick your cock in my cunt!" good use of the word

I prefer the word pussy. It's sweet and sexy and naughty. Just like the thing herself.

The only time I use the word "cunt", is if I want to talk dirty to my hubby.

Yeah in your neck of the woods maybe. I know lots and lots of girls/women who use the term 'cunt'. I know lots of females who liberally sprinkle their conversational language with 'fuck' and 'cunt'

You could say I keep some pretty awful company but I notice these days that the youngsters, girls and boys, use swearing everyday to everyone.

You're right I do keep some pretty awful company don't I.

Whatever.

I notice one thing you yankees and most English-as-a-second language countries miss out on is the term 'fanny' to refer to the vagina. There are very few British writers on this site who use the wholly British term simply to accomodate everyone else, when it was us that invented the fucking language for fucks sake.

But on the rare occasions when I do see British use of 'fanny' I smile with fond regard, and remember what all you 'pussies' are missing out on as an acceptable alternative.

But then I am,

For a person who grew up hearing "fanny" meaning "butt," it doesn't sound right used for anything else.

I do like the way Terry Pratchett uses the term "Sweet Fanny Adams." I take it that it means something is nonexistant, silly, and you're dumb to even think it's real.

"If I cannot sleep with you,
maybe I could get a taste?
Put your fanny on my mouth
and your booty on my face..."

No, two women would no talk to each other like this. At least, not in private. Oh, they might if men were around and they were trying to tease, but in personal conversation? Nope. Normally, we don't discuss what names we call our genitalia, actually. For me, even without the use of the word "cunt", this would be a contrived conversation and easily picked out as a male author. Obviously a man who has not been privy to women's conversations.

Now, now, now. "Fanny" as it is used in the UK is a slang term. I think you know that. And slang terms do not often follow from country to country. Besides, "fanny" in the US refers to the ass - oops! I guess that is bum or arse, right? So, when I read a story and the gentleman in question begins to lick a womans fanny, it truly twists my brain around. I think he's rimming her! And when the writer adds in (as one did), that it was hairy, my reaction was "EEWWW! Yucky! Hairy butt!"

Besides, surely you know that us Americans have never truly learned to speak English? ;)

*raising hand in the air, voiolently blushing*

Eeeeh... actually... me and my friend have had such a discussion. In private.

Then again, we're strange.
