No saturday morning full English breakfast for me tomorrow. No TV. No sex, no Internet. Will I survive 24 hours of sin-atonement??? And will 24 hours be enough???? Tune in tomorrow after sundown to find out

That's going to be one big pile of atonement for 24-hours to handle, Brother Joe. In your particular case, something along the lines of a Lenten Length period may be in order :)

That much fasting would be a sin in the classical Jewish worldview. The material world is considered a gift from God, and asceticism is seen as a rejection of that gift.

Preservation of health and prevention of suffering are supposed to be the overriding requirements of Judaic law. The highest holy observances are supposed to be put aside when life and limb are at stake.

I feel with you. :rose:

My wishes for a blessed holiday to all my Jewish friends. I'll "tip my hat" to your tradition by spending a moment contemplating atonement. :rose:

I guess it was my sophomore of junior year in college they decided to fly us up to Darmouth for a soccer game (well, actually they decided to fly the football team up, but they let the soccer team go along with them). The only problem -- the day of the flight was Yom Kippur. So I'm sitting next to one of my Jewish friends who has just polished off the meal provided -- a ham and cheese omelete. His comment -- if this plane crashes, I am in real trouble.

Though...it might not be "too much" fasting if it were prescribed, or believed to have been prescribed for God. For instance, while the fasting during the month of Ramadan may seem like a long time, it's endured by millions each year, plus, in a like spirit of health and prevention of suffering, there are certain exceptions (for women, during their period, or if pregnant or breastfeeding, and for anyone, if they are sick, infirm, traveling, et al)

Yes, but in the classical Jewish worldview, it's believed to be proscribed, not prescribed. :)

That doesn't mean fasting for Ramadan is wrong or sinful; it certainly isn't in the eyes of Islam. But that's why Yom Kippur is only meant to be a day-long fast, as an aspect of temperance. I think fasting for Ramadan is meant to teach a different lesson about devotion, but the two are not in conflict.

Well said, makes sense.

Thanks for the insights! ;)

Fortunately my humble opinions on religion don't make people hot :D

At least I don't think they do.

Do they?

Jewish law applies only to jews. Non-jews are free to reply away, and no ofense should be taken where it was not meant. Jews who don't follow the law, well, if they are posting here on Yom Kippur, I think they are way past caring.

Free perhaps but still rude when you know he's not listening.

Yeah, maharat, but dem christians cheat - Sundays aren't counted in lent.

Same for dem muslims - they have a rammadan fast, but it doesn't have effect during hours of darkness.

Wasn't God nice to give humans, of any religion, a 'get out of jail free' card.

I know, I'm a gentile.

Well, here we could get into the tricky issue of "secular Jewish culture," but instead it's interesting to note that, as far as I know, Judaism is the only religion where it's harder for the faithful to get into the Kingdom of Heaven than the unbelievers. :)

Hmm I put on 2 lbs fasting. Probably the meal before + the meal after.

Not strictly being allowed to use high-tech stuff like compters and TV, I read a book. Reading is quite cool, but it will never replace TV and the internet. And where the fuck is the "off" switch anyway? Does it hibernate when you close it?

I also sat around a lot, and thought. I had a great idea, a really brilliant invention, but as I suspected would happen, I can't for the life of me remember it after coming down. It had something to fo with angels. Or maybe a wrought-iron gate.

Books have an automatic "off" function. You know how flip-phones automatically disconnect when you close 'em? Well, a book will do something like that when you close it. BUT, don't leave a book open, laying face-down. That can lead to a lot of run-on sentences and loss of punctuation. You may need a jump-edit to get things back in order.

Well, yeah, in Ramadan one breaks the fast every night. The trick is not to overindulge. "Fasting" shouldn't then beget "feasting". It sorta misses the point...

How are you, anyway, Elle?
