Oblimo said:That much fasting would be a sin in the classical Jewish worldview. The material world is considered a gift from God, and asceticism is seen as a rejection of that gift.
Preservation of health and prevention of suffering are supposed to be the overriding requirements of Judaic law. The highest holy observances are supposed to be put aside when life and limb are at stake.

That doesn't mean fasting for Ramadan is wrong or sinful; it certainly isn't in the eyes of Islam. But that's why Yom Kippur is only meant to be a day-long fast, as an aspect of temperance. I think fasting for Ramadan is meant to teach a different lesson about devotion, but the two are not in conflict.

Books have an automatic "off" function. You know how flip-phones automatically disconnect when you close 'em? Well, a book will do something like that when you close it. BUT, don't leave a book open, laying face-down. That can lead to a lot of run-on sentences and loss of punctuation. You may need a jump-edit to get things back in order.Sub Joe said:Hmm I put on 2 lbs fasting. Probably the meal before + the meal after.
Not strictly being allowed to use high-tech stuff like compters and TV, I read a book. Reading is quite cool, but it will never replace TV and the internet. And where the fuck is the "off" switch anyway? Does it hibernate when you close it?
elfin_odalisque said:Yeah, maharat, but dem christians cheat - Sundays aren't counted in lent.
Same for dem muslims - they have a rammadan fast, but it doesn't have effect during hours of darkness.
Wasn't God nice to give humans, of any religion, a 'get out of jail free' card.
I know, I'm a gentile.
