There's going to be some 1,200 pounds of debris! Luckily, there's only 1 in 3,200 chance of getting hit by it :D From here:
A dead 6-ton satellite isn't falling as fast as NASA expected. NASA's experts are now predicting the satellite will crash down to Earth late Friday or early Saturday, Eastern Time. Solar activity is no longer the major factor in the satellite's descent. Rather, its orientation apparently has changed, and that's slowing its fatal plunge.

Late Friday morning, NASA cautioned there's a now a low probability any surviving debris will land in the United States. Earlier this week, NASA said North America would be in the clear. Most of the satellite will disintegrate, but 26 pieces -- or 1,200 pounds -- are expected to rain down somewhere.

NASA officials said Thursday that about 530 million people in North America were in the clear.
Takes one back to days of yore, when Skylab fell....

You might notice that they have not indicated where else on Earth has the likelihood.
Only that the the USA is mostly in the clear.
Are they going to issue protective helmets to the rest of the world, then ?

This must have something to do with the vernal equinox. I think we are in for a spectacular fall.

It's going to hurt me...

Yes, I know it is a small chance of hitting the USA. I have suffered from small chances before.

It's going to hurt me :(

Autumnal equinox actually--Vernal is spring--but hey, they're having that there in Australia and that's where Skylab hit. If it hits there, however, I'm going to be suspicious. It's awfully coincidental.... http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/skep.gif

You are so right. Boy is my face red. I'll bet Autumnal has something to do with autumn. I really should have paid closer attention in bonehead school.

According to scientists when this school bus sized satellite breaks up, some chunks will be as big as a refrigerator! Some hailstone, huh?

Hey, Thee. Are you all right? I took the 2-to-1 odds in Vegas that favored you would NOT get hit by the satellite. Please post back soon, because I could really use the cash.

UARS is down but...

Nick Johnson, chief scientist with NASA’s Orbital Debris Program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, says the space agency has received “no credible” reports of observers seeing the UARS re-entry. Officials think the satellite most likely fell into atmosphere over the open Pacific Ocean around 12 a.m. EDT (0400 GMT) and the surviving debris would have landed in the sea before reaching North America.
