Ok so my scanner stopped working. It seemed to have no power. So I bought a new power cord. It worked for a few days, then same problem. So I thought maybe it was the scanner itself. Anyway... I just installed a new scanner all together. At first it worked fine. Now, there is no scanner icon in my tool bar and when I click on icon on my desk top it says not found. If I go to my paper port, (where I manage files from my scanner) I CAN scan items. The bottons on the actual scanner will not work either. I tried reinstalling, I see the icon on my tool bar for a second then it disappears. I recently installed Spybot. Could this be keeping the scanner from staying installed? Spybot was NOT installed when I had the original scanner problem. ( I think there was just something loose where I plugged that in or something, b/c I was not getting power with that one) PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Spybot won't affect directly your scanner.

If you use some program (and I've never heard of a specific one) that is distributed with imbeded adware, then if spybot cleans up that ppieceo f adware then the program that included MAY decide not to run because the adware had been removed. This is the same thing the warning says everytime spybot starts up.

So what programs other than paperport do you use?

Does your scanner connect to a USB port or to a printer port?

What kind of scanner (brand and model) do you have?

What version of Windows are you running? (some do USB better than others.)

When you (re-)installed, did you use the CD that came with the scanner or did Windows have everything you needed? Are ther newer drivers available from the manufacturer?

The scanner is a visioneer one touch 6600. It connects with a USB port, I used the disk it came with. I am using windows ME. IF it was a spotbot problem, what would I look for to select to recover? I sorta solved some of the problem. (I think) I went to programs, paper port, one touch configure. The icon on my tool bar now works and the scanner buttons work, but the icon on the desktop still does not. I am not sure if it will continue to work b/c I had done this before and it worked for a short time.

With great regret, I must inform you that I gave my 6600 away because I couldn't keep it working using Windows 98 SE.

When it stops working next time, unplug the USB cable and plug it in again. This should make windows re-recognize it which might activate some things.

I've also heard that PnP and Visioneer drivers sometimes "fight" for who really controls the scanner. When you reboot, PnP recognizes the scanner and "injures" the Visioneer drivers by removing special features like buttons. This was just a rumor.

Spybot won't remove anything associated with your scanner. It will not touch drivers or programs from Visionner/ScansoftPaperport.

If you use a shareware program that includes adware (the shareware program author makes money from the ad people) THAT particular program may stop working after Spybot runs.

I'm sure there must be some shareware program that included scanner support, but even if it stops working (because you uninstall it, or it requires adware that spybot uninstalls) you still should be able to use the scanner and any other program with scnner support (like Paperport).

I'm 99.44% sure (and I'm a spybot user who tries to keeps up with spyware/adware/malware) spybot isn't your problem.

As for fixing things, I'm sorry that I have not specific thing for you to try, other than reinstalling with fresh drivers downloaded from Visioneer. As I said eariler, I traded my one-touch for an Epson and vowed to never buy Visioneer again.

Did you remove the old scanner before installing the new one -- removed in a software sense, not just unpluged and replaced.

Disconnect your scanner, uninstall any software for either scanner, and remove any scanner entries in the hardware profile in Control Panel -> System -> Hardware Profile.

Then reboot, connect your scanner, and reinstall the software.

Check your USB drivers for a date that matches the rest of the Win ME components -- some USB devices try to install USB support that is incompatible because Win ME dosn't properly report USB capability to some install programs. Win ME does NOT like older or newer USB drivers nd only works properly with the USB drivers that come with it.

I did remove my old scanner before I installed. I checked in my Hardware profile and it just said "orginal configuration". How do I check my USB drivers? The scanner is installed on a USB driver that I installed myself. Do you think the problem that I had with my last scanner was not really the power cord then? I think I had started a thread about that when I first had problems. Let me see if I can find it, to see if I am missing any other changes I made.

See the attached image.

That's the dialogue I get when I go to the hardware profile, open the "USB Controllers" branch, highlight the USB Hub, click properties and the device driver tab.

If you click driver details, it gives you a list of file names.

The date of all of your USB drivers should be the same as for all of the other components of Win ME. It most definitely should NOT be earlier than the dates on the rest of your Win ME files.

From what I've seen, most of the USB drivers that come with things like scanners are there to add USB capability to Win 95 and Win 95 drivers will cause problems with later versions of Windows -- especially Win ME, in my experience.

There is no USB controller branch to click.

Strange.

I think that is probably an indication that the USB drivers are improperly identified (maybe listed under serial ports?) and are not the Win ME USB drivers.
