In the prologue of historian Rich Atkinson's book "Day of Battle", he recounts the trip the British (including Churchill) made to Washington DC in 1942 to stategize about what to do next. On page 16 (paraphrasing, badly): "Washington was eager to please, atwitter...At one dinner party, guests drew names from a hat and were paired up as lovers from history." (Greatest generation indeed!)
So the idea is that the advance British party have recruited and trained young, naive US women to serve as attendants and gofers for the Brits. Must support our allies! All in for the war effort! Also, legions of US men have left for military training.
The women end up at said dinner party, awestruck sheep in the den of wolves...
