W's Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 would have forestalled all this fuss we're going through now, by providing a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

Eternal shame on all the Republicans -- not politicians, but rank-and-file voters -- who scuttled it.

It really did happen that way, too -- I remember it -- the deal was all cooked, but then Pub Congresscritters got a deluge of letters and calls from xenophobic constituents screaming about "rewarding" lawbreakers. It was all grassroots, and it was utterly disgraceful. If you were one of them, do your nation and the world a favor and never vote again.
