Writing Exercise

Well, my story got rejected with the following message:

Generally, Chain Stories must be grouped together in some way - hence the word "chain". Even if none of the stories are interrelated, your group should come up with a naming convention to keep them all together in the story list (i.e. "CHAINNAME: Chapter Name")

I thought I had followed the proscribed method, but apparently something was found wanting.

The original title I submitted was, "Chain Story - The Set" which is how they suggested sending it in. But the rejection thing pops up a resubmit, so I will try with the title being only "The Set" and see if that goes through.

I know they take a while. I'd just like to be sure I didn't screw something up in the submission for a chain story, since it isn't as straight-forward as a normal story.

Just for the record:

1. stories in a chain will get posted much quicker, if you send a pm to Laurel, telling her what you intend to do, and let her have a copy of the publishing schedule. That way they know to get them through the vetting system quicker.

If you just post them individually with no prior notification that you are working to a group schedule, they'll just sit in the queue with all the others.

2. I did mention much earlier, when you first started this thread, that the minimum word length for a Lit story is 750 words, not 500. Not sure if anyone took that on board, but I did notice you hadn't changed the minimum word length in your first post.

'the ever helpful' Auntie

Good luck everyone.

'The Set' is the Chain name.
That's the one part everyone has to use - then you all use your own title for your chapter.

I think that's what it means....for example.

The Set - Chapter 1
The Set - Chapter 2

So you could either each just give your piece a chapter number, or an individual title.

I didn't edit the post, but I think the 750 word minimum was observed by all. Mine was in the 3000 word range.

Perhaps a message to Laurel would help. Is it just laurel or what?

It's Laurel. Just Laurel.

Also when you submit your story, in the notes box, make sure you mention that it is<'chapter X> of the Chain Story 'The Set', due to be posted on <date>.

That can also help.

Thanks for the help Matriarch. I sent laurel a PM asking for assistance with this situation. I did follow the FAQ for posting a chain story, but it didn't suggest contacting laurel directly to grease the proverbial wheels.

Hrm...

I should probably go and change the titling on mine then, just to be safe :D

*gentle reminder to my second post above*

Okay--I think I got it fixed :)

If you guys have to edit your titles, don't forget to put "EDIT" at the end of your new title when you resubmit :D

(Don't be like me  :D)

When I wrote Laurel, her response was that if everyone uses the title, "The Set" everything should be fine. She didn't mention using chapter numbers in the titles. But I would definately suggest that every put a link to this thread in the box for notes, and mention which submission you are making.

Ok, finished my contribution and it's off to the editor. :) Just so I know, I submit it as a chain story, and then make the title "The Set." Do I add Chaoter 3 or my own title to the end of it?

I think you can add your own title, kind of like the VR chain. :)

I'm still a bit stumped with mine...hopefully the muse will return and I'll get it done in the next couple of days.

Well, my submission has posted. :) The Set Ch. 3 is finally up? Kinda weird that mine's the only one up so far though. Wonder why.

Heh. That's hilarious :D

Well, I had some submission weirdness with mine so it wouldn't surprise me if mine took a bit longer to get up, but mine's still pending.

S'ok though, I don't mind :)

At least we have something to read now :D

Yeah I figured as much. :p Seems a lot of that has been going around. Took one of my friends stories over two weeks to post. Mine took like three days. :D Hope you guys enjoy it! :)

I just read yours :D

It was a very sweet story, and I liked the idea of the lonely, recluse painter who sees his muse in a dream, and then finds that she's delightfully real :D

All the words were worked in so well and naturally in the context of the piece as well, (I had trouble with a few myself...).

Great job :)

Thank you so much. :) Once I saw the set list the idea just came to me, and really flowed well. :D The only word I had real trouble with was transform, which just happened to be one of the owrds I contributed. go figure.

Anyway, I'm really glad you liked it. :D

You're welcome :)

Heh. Transform. I had trouble with that one too :D and harmony.

lol, funny you should mention that, because both those words were the ones I contributed to the list.

Sorry about that. :p

Hee hee :)

That's alright, hon--that's why this is a challenge :D

I updated the first post in the thread, and the original schedule post to have links to the three stories that are up so far. Well, mine is supposedly up, even though I have to navigate to my name to find the story (about 5 days ago it showed the publishing date as 3/9/07 which I thought was weird since it was only 3/3/07).

A while ago I started a thread on story ideas, looking for inspiration. I remembered a writing exercise where someone provides a list of words and the author has to come up with a story using those words. This is the story I came up with: Robbed Her, Rocked Her

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to try again. Maybe some other authors would want to join me in the attempt. It would be interesting to see how diverse a selection of stories can be created from a similar list of words.

Any interest?

EDIT: Since there was enough interest, we started a chain story, the publishing schedule and links to the published stories are below:

2/24 - only_more_so
2/28 - EHawkins
3/4 - Trombonus
3/8 - scriptordelecto
3/12 - Vermilion
3/16 - Sexxy Vixen

Er... I forgot that the publishing list was going to be updated and I started my own
