I think Serenity is a perfect encapsulation of what would have happened. They explained the Reavers. Is it better that we explored that mystery? Did it help to uncover the awful origin story of a boogeyman, or was it better to leave them mysterious and never know why?
Same with the Borg in Star Trek. They went from an enemy that could not be reasoned with to a nerfed group that lost any kind of scariness or mystery.

Overexplaining is a subtle but pervasive problem with any kind of storytelling that is inevitable when there is overexposure.

I could never figure out what people found in that show. I love fantasy and sci-fi, and I love Firefly. But Farscape is just...
The production, the acting, the cartoonish feel... I don't see it. I tried watching it twice, and I made myself watch several episodes even if I was suppressing the need to cringe...

You Farscape lovers are nuts!
I have a deep love of Cleopatra 2525. Farscape is a step up in production values.

Farscape is Horny Muppets in Space, and either loving or hating that are both perfectly valid responses 🥰

By the way, Cleopatra 2525 is about a stripper who gets a boob job but the surgery goes badly and she gets cryogenically frozen then is awoken many years later by a couple of warrior women fighting machine overlords. It has Gina Torres in it. I fucking love it. It's campy and it knows it's campy.

I have the DVDs somewhere, but never got round to watching it.

Even Farscape, a show I absolutely fucking adore, does not have the social credit and legend that Firefly does. Farscape more or less got the correct number of seasons for its premise. It would have benefitted from fewer episodes per season, I think, to cut down a little on the bloat, but all in all it had a pretty successful run.

Today, Farscape is all but forgotten.
Farscape has been slowly developing a cult following. It's now available to stream. Give it another decade and I predict it'll be up there with Firefly as a niche interest thing.

Its wide range of non-humanoid aliens, closer involvement with wars, and of course Claudia Black and/or Ben Browder in black leather, and good scripts made it a cut above most shows. And overall it didn't go on too long, though some episodes did.

I want to believe.

I came to it through streaming, and really enjoyed it! Very fun, weirdly sexy, and the puppetry holds up so much better than the CGI from that era.

His episodes on Hercules / Xena as Autolycus are still some of my favorite episodes of television ever.
I have an abiding love for Bubba Ho-Tep. I went in expecting popcorn and instead somehow it delivered a full meal (made from popcorn).
