Man, that had to be a sight on that causeway in Florida.

The boat pullin gup to shore, spilling Haitians hither and yon. Folks clambering into trucks and vans and begging people for rides. I do happen to pity that one particular pickup truck driver who got mobbed. I don't think Chevy's going to use that video for an advertising campaign anytime soon.

But there's another issue altogether. We do treat Haitians quite differently than any other group who wishes to come to this country. Is that actually justified? I watched the Fox News coverage and listened to the lawyer who was one of the prosecutors who worked on the Clinton Administration team that ousted thousands of immigrants because they claimed economic hardship instead of political oppression.

But, to my thinking, economic hardship is as much political oppression in most countries as anything else. In Haiti, a country with a rich tradition for brutal and corrupt leadership, the poverty of its citizens is a direct result of the greed and neglect of its leaders. I'd think that would count quite well as political oppression, especially in a country where one is freer than anywhere else to make your way in the world.
