I had a similar experience a few years ago where it was a few degrees above freezing driving home from work and a toddler in nothing but diapers ran across the street in front of me. I stopped and wrangled the kid, looked around and there was nobody to be seen. I didn't know what to do. Last thing I wanted was to put him in my car and get accused of kidnapping the little turd by some duddly do-right. I wrapped him up in my winter coat and within minutes a frantic grandmother came outside yelling his name. I approached her with just his ear and demanded money.
Long story short, I eventually gave him back to her and went about my business. Now that I have had time to think about it, if it ever happens again I will put the little shit in my car while on the phone with the po-po.
