Part with money or buy gifts for someone you have only met online?

This comes from an earlier question I was asked on another thread.

Would love to hear peoples oppinions and experiences on this one.

If you have, did you regret it? Would you recommend it?

I think stick to people you meet in real life.......if you really want to waste your money send me ten grand.

Ah well... you've missed out then. I've given gifts to people online and received them . Someone online even made a gift for someone else online and it was exquisite. And most gifts I've had I treasure.

It depends how seriously you take it.

Though I suspect that anyone who refers to online and offline as 'real' and otherwise isn't really one to buy presents or worth risking spending any money on.

I haven't, and I know I wouldn't feel all that comfortable accepting a gift (since I have such a problem accepting them any other time), but I really wouldn't be uncomfortable with sending a gift to someone I had only ever met online. If the person moved me, and I had the money to do so, I would love to do so :)

Haven't yet, but wouldn't rule it out ;)

So online and offline aren't real.....makes since in the twilight zone you live in I guess.....lol

I think you'll find what DB meant is a lot of people consider the 'online world' to not be real life. And was trying to say that why should someone you know online be considered any less real than someone you've met in person...they still have feelings and are a living breathing person :)

And to answer the original post...

Yes I've given gifts and received some truly wonderful things in return...but I wouldn't do it with someone I've only ever posted with on the boards...they have been people who I talk to a LOT on YIM and who over a fair amount of time have come to love and call some of my best friends..******* or offline.

I think that is a level headed approach, but there have got to be some bad eperiences out there

Would I buy gifts for someone I have met online? Absolutely and never regretted it

I should have given the poll more thought. I did participate in the Christmas and Valentine gift exchange in the HT Cafe. I wouldn't have done that had it not been an exchange. It was a positive experience and I'd gladly do it again.

I also belong to two Yahoo groups for card makers and we have monthly swaps. Do I worry about giving my address out? No. Anyone with an tech savvy can get my address anyway. Of course you won't know if that's really me or an alias.

All kidding aside I think people should be as wary online as in real life. Would you give your address to a beggar on the street? Or a hooker?

I've sent out Holiday cards to people I've met here. I've sent gifts and other items to KW all the time, as well as other people. Some have stopped due to reasons I wont get into.

Granted it took awhile for me to do this, I like to get to know the person before exchanging addresses.

I'm sure there are some negative experiences out there, but not on this end.

:D

I've received treasured gifts from online friends and sent some with pieces of my heart as well. From racing and Harley t-shirts, edible goodies from my area and more personal items. I've also been very careful as to who I've given my home and work address to. Thankfully that hasn't come back to bite me in the ass.

I have! I,also, received a gift back from the gift receiver. A gift worth more than I could ever return to her! She gave up her whole life, everything she knew to come join me in my life.Soon, she will be giving me another beautiful gift, her hand in marriage!
I would say online, treat your relationship as you would any realationship,
trust your heart

Well done for explaining.... I felt it was pretty clear, but there are some really stupid people on here aren't there.... I'll use short words for him next time.

I'm sure there has. But if you actually get to know the person (and it can be done, despite what some say) for a time before doing it. Having said that I have exchanged gifts with quite a few on here and lickily it hasn't come back to haunt me yet.... though I do still worry about one. Nevertheless one apart it's been wholly worth it.

I have, both given and received, and would again. I've participated in a secret Santa and secret Valentine gift exchange, and not only was it fun to figure the person out and pick a gift for them, but also to receive them. Also, I've recevied and given gifts from dear friends that I met online. It's no different from people I've met off-line, well except that I can't see their reaction, and they can't see mine.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. That's what PO boxes or shipping to an office is for :D

Ahh.. you've been speaking to the 'clique' I see. They love stupid malleable fools.... you'll fit in well. Because they pull the strings of their puppets, they assume everyone has that sort of relationship.

Still having fun demeaning and belittling newbies who make posts and start threads you disapprove of? Still loving going into the blurt thread and making sarcastic posts.. or just a 'hilarious' smiley? The long winter nights with you must just fly by. BIG man. :D

Have a nice day.

Actually.. you've been on iggy for ages (not because you annoy me.... you have NOTHING of interest other than lame one liners or stupid smileys to say. You bore me)... only the fact juicybaby & lexie quoted you let me know what they said. Dunno if you spotted that Braniac. But hey... I'm quite happy to see you. I miss laughing at you try to prove how funny and clever you are by your 'charm' and 'wit'... that might work on the brain dead. You dish out nastiness and bile all the time... but you can't take it.. and you lash out. You deride the GB, but you belong there..... but I get a feeling that you couldn't hack it there... they'd eat you for brekkie, and you know this... which is why you pick on the vulnerable here. To make yourself feel strong and big.

And matey.. if any on my thread talk to you... then that's their look-out. If they have a brain they can see what a scumbag you are just by looking at your posts. If they then wanna carry on, then fine. I'm sure chatting to you is very stimulating. :D

You don't rattle my cage though... I look at you and you make me laugh.... on the occasion I see you quoted. It makes me feel better.
