I definately await the responses to that. :D

Awww, I expect people, including myself, to be partisan in how they view the right or wrong of it...

Lauren has every reason to be much more objective about it in a match that has no effect on Portugal at all...

that said, I still don't think that tackle deserved a red...

The comments on TV about it here, are all pointing toward all expulsions being technically correct, rigorous, according to what FIFA asks, but that the referee could could possibly have been more lenient and pedagogical. Which is a lame-ass way of saying they want to agree with you but can't find any objective reasons. :D

I don't have any particular problem with a referee intepreting the rules strictly, but in this case, he should also intepret them consistently.

Personally, I don't think either of Pope's yellow cards should have been issued -- if those were yellow cards, then the game should have wound up being played three on two and determined by about fourteen penatly kicks.

The elbow to the face shoud have been a red card, and Mastroeni's two-footed, studs-up tackle to the ankle of the planted foot should have been a card of some color -- maybe not red, but I don't have a problem with it being red either.

Pope's first one, definitely yellow. Second one...meh. Could have gone either way. Anyway, I'm biased. I had him in my Fantasy Footie lineup, so I lost a shitload of points.

There's no maybe there. There is no way in hell any two-footed, studs-up tackle to the ankle of the planted foot can receive anything other than a direct red card.

True, by the strict interpretation of the rules. However, the call wasn't consistent with the way the ref was seeing other hard, technically cardable, tackles in that game.

Japan 0 Croatio 0, BTW.

Five yellow cards in the game which is apparently the average for this world cup, but it wasn't a game that looked to be that physcal.

Bugger off. If he had scored, I would have gotten points no one else even knew existed. lol

Sorry, couldn't help myself :D When I saw this morning, I wondered what you knew that no one else did. :rose:

You just have to try this sort of stunt every once in a while on the off-shot that it will somehow work. :D

Watching Austrailia-Brazil now...

If I were the Aussies I'd be playing this game carefully today...they have four key players who got yellows vs. Japan and their best shot at going forward is to win or draw vs. Croatia....

This has to be the most boring match in the history of football. If Brazil somehow stumbles along into the final and ends up winning this world cup, it will be a huge disservice to the game.

Mau exemplo para o futuro

Precisely...

Você não poderia ter dito melhor... Ai que pena que me dá saber que nunca mais haverá uma final mundial como Santos (minha cidade) e Benfica!

Eu sou do Porto, por isso não me fales em Benfica. :D

Brazil got a little bit better after Robinho came in for Ronaldo, but 2-0 was still unfair for Australia. A match as poor as this one ought to have finished 0-0.

Brazil 2 - Australia 0

Goals:
Brazil
7. ADRIANO (49')
21. FRED (90')

Brazil could have mailed in their performance. In fact, maybe they did.

Fred!? How did somebody with such a plebian name get on Brazil's team? :p

It wasn't a great match, but it was world's better than the first match today. I think Brazil tried to be too cute at times and lost some opportunities for a blow-out.

Ronaldo may be old, fat, slow and lazy, but he still drew enough defenders in the box to make the first goal possible. I'd still rather see Robinho starting than Ronaldo have a chance at outscoring Pele.

I kept giggling, everytime the commentator said his name, and thought it was brilliant that he scored - but that's just the child in me. ;) :D

So what happened every time he said "Caca"?

I pee'd my pants.

It was especially bad when Lineker said the other night, "Brazil had a Kaka game..."

France was robbed...

Not only the goal, but I thought the yellow to Zindane was weak too...

France is screwed. Unless they actually end up in the final by some miraculous chance, the french press and fans are going to rip them a new one.

Regardless of if they were robbed or not, they played like arrogant, uninterrested, overpaid divas. Marginally less so than in the Swiss game, but still beyond excuse.

Oooh the imagery from that first sentance :D

Agre with you Liar, they took it for granted that they were the better team -you just can't do that.

Believe me, I'm a Manchester United fan, I've seen far too much over confindence far too many times.

Well, it's similar to things that are technically fouls but borederline committed by defenders in the box, which are rarely whistled for PKs. Red Cards and Penalty Kicks are so destructive to the flow of a match that they need to be called with great caution.
