Perky just says <laughing>. Some others say *giggle* or HAHAHA! or an occasional MUAHhahahah.

What is the best way to connote laughter online?

I prefer *giggling* because that's actually what I do, but some people think that's silly.

So in an attempt to sound more worldly and mature, I'd say *tee hee*.

I seem to say hehe - but I'll work on that and come up with something else sometime.

I never, ever, ever say LOL, ROFL, or anything close. Those just sound goofy.

"hehe" isn't too offensive...and I like "muahahaha".

Most people seem to prefer the "I just spit coffee on my monitor" phrase.
