I'm taking a stab at writing a sex scene, and I'm wondering what the proper spelling is:

"cum" or "come"

I feel like a retard about this. Maybe it's just a preference thing, but I've seen it both ways, so I'm confused.

Thanks for any help you're able to impart.

The academic consensus seems to be that "cum" is a noun and "come" is a verb. In other words, "come" is what you do during sex and "cum" is the stuff that's excreted from the penis when that happens.

However I see "cum" used as a verb all the time and have used it thus myself. So I'd say, the right way is whatever feels right for you.

:)

My publishers insist on 'cum' as a noun and 'come' as a verb.

It's an evolving issue, but this is what I see from most publishers too.

I'll be happy when it evolves to "cum" in both noun and adjectival form to differentiate it from other meanings.

And there are others (myself, at least) who use 'come' for the verb and the noun, so any way you want it.

My rule is: it's "come" if they are making love, but it's "cum" if they are fucking.

And no matter what you do, there are always going to be readers who don't like it, and will tell you that you're wrong :p

I can't even begin to count the number of comments I've see that say "come" is wrong as either the noun or the verb, even though a look at virtually any dictionary will tell you the person doesn't have the foggiest clue what they're talking about :D

Yeah - it's a free country. We can use the words any way we feel like...

"Cum Laude" - Making lots of noise while orgasming.

"Cummunism" - People orgasming together (and no single orgasm is better than the rest).

"Cummins" - Sounding like a large diesel engine while orgasming.

"Cumbaya" - Orgasming with friends at a campfire.

"Cumquat" - Having a fruity orgasm.

"Cum-ulus" - Orgasm in the clouds.

"Cumpass" - Ejaculating due north.

"Cumedian" - A person cracking jokes while orgasming.

The possibilities are endless...

Cute, but for any here thinking of publishing to the market, the decision isn't always as freewheeling or author centered. (Just keep that in mind.) In publishing to the market, the "we" is often broader than just the author, and sometimes some other "we" than the author determines whether it's going to get published.

Cumuppance....Getting an orgasm you've earned.
I like it. Of course in my younger days I couldn't sing "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" without chuckling. And yes, this past Christmas counts as my younger days. :D
