Nothing to get excited about: The indifferent 'meh' gains place in English dictionary

LONDON (AP) At least someone is excited about "meh."

The expression of indifference or boredom has gained a place in the Collins English Dictionary after generating a surprising amount of enthusiasm among lexicographers.

Publisher HarperCollins announced Monday the word had been chosen from terms suggested by the public for inclusion in the dictionary's 30th anniversary edition, to be published next year.

The origins of "meh" are murky, but the term grew in popularity after being used in a 2001 episode of "The Simpsons" in which Homer suggests a day trip to his children Bart and Lisa.

"They both just reply 'meh' and keep watching TV," said Cormac McKeown, head of content at Collins Dictionaries.

The dictionary defines "meh" as an expression of indifference or boredom, or an adjective meaning mediocre or boring. Examples given by the dictionary include "the Canadian election was so meh."

The dictionary's compilers said the word originated in North America, spread through the Internet and was now entering British spoken English.

"This is a new interjection from the U.S. that seems to have inveigled its way into common speech over here," McKeown said. "Internet forums and e-mail are playing a big part in formalizing the spellings of vocal interjections like these. A couple of other examples would be 'hmm' and 'heh.'

"Meh" was selected by Collins after it asked people to submit words they use in conversation that are not in the dictionary. Other suggestions included jargonaut, a fan of jargon; frenemy, an enemy disguised as a friend; and huggles, a hybrid of hugs and snuggles.

What other word-lets would you want made official.

I've always been partial to 'feh' myself. I think it's a hybrid of "fucking" and "meh".

When you're agressively indifferent.

Pfft - an expression of derision or indifference. Spoken as typed.

snerk - something between a snigger and a smirk

Both awesome additions!

*kisses*

Was it Safe bet or hollyocks that got me using bleh? Nah, just keep it with meh for that one, and let bleh be a derivative ;)

Yeah, bleh is good too.

I also like the rarely used peh. It's a bit stronger and more disdainful than meh.

Frigging: "It's frigging cold this morning" - for some reason slightly more acceptable to say in front of wives, motherinLaws and small children. :D

But not ministers or the director of your child's nursery school or to anyone at a job interview.

And Smeg. You can use smeg and smegging a lot as well. I have even heard 'smeg head' - niiice. Satisfyingly juvenile.

Au Contraire. "Frigging" was a very common word in my daughter's nursery school. Of course, said nursery school was located on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejuene (run by a retired Woman Marine Drill Instructor, who also lovingly referred to them as "maggots," "puke monsters" and "her darling little turd hurlers.") :D

Was Red Dwarf the origin of that one, or did they just grab it and run with it?

My daughter was saying "meh" at least five years before it got to be so cool.

I'm having a hard time getting excited about this.

If only there was a word to describe my feeling about it.

tchuh - that's another favourite

An expression of frustration at someone else's stupidity (there are some other meanings, too, but I can't think of a way to delineate them)

"Feh" is Yiddish! It's the official cry for when a baby is playing in schmutz, or dirt! "Feh!" you cry. "Don't put that ashtray in your mouth! Feh! Feh!"

I was always partial to mnyeh rather than the lazy "meh". That Russian curl of the tongue around that "mny" is so much more contemptible than a simple "m". "Meh" is hardly better than the indifferent "eh".

Bleh would be good, As in describing a pink and brown shirt. "That's so bleh." Or the way you feel after eating 2 Big Macs: Bleh.

I use the word Yurg a lot watching Man versus Wild when Bear Grylles eats grubs and larvae.

"I just ate 2 Big Macs."
"How do you feel?"
"Bleh."
"Yurg."

ETA: Oh. I see Bleh was mentioned. Oh well. I'll let it stand.
