UNCLE SIDNEY AND THE MEXICAN by James Lee Burke.
In 1947 Texas an alcoholic comes to work drunk with a bottle in his back pocket. After the drunk decides not to work, and throw rotten tomatoes at his associates, the boss confronts him and sends him home. The drunk knows the policy and the consequences. The drunk is white by the way.
Well! The crew becomes upset with the boss....a Christian...and go to work to force this boss to pay the drunk for the pay he forfeited being drunk, refusing to toil, and throwing tomatoes. Uncle Sidney, the kind and liberal uncle of one of the workers, calls the union hall asking for 6 of their worst workers then goes to see the boss and threaten him to pay the drunk for not working. The boss pays the drunk. Sidneys nephew dates a Mexican girl, so that's the Mexican part of the drama.
I thought it might be satire, but now I don't.
