After months of legislative inactivity, (Moscow Mitch) McConnell,
the majority leader, has scheduled votes on two abortion-related bills

The Senate voted Monday to block consideration of a measure that
would punish any doctor who fails to provide medical care to
a child born alive after an attempted abortion.

All but three Democrats voted against a procedural motion
on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,
denying it the necessary 60 votes to proceed.

The final vote count was 53 in favor and 44 opposed.

The bill would require a health-care practitioner to
“exercise the same degree of professional skill, care,
and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child”
as he or she would to “any other child born alive at the same
gestational age.” The bill includes criminal penalties, a right
of civil action for an affected mother and a mandatory
reporting requirement for other health providers.

Bill banning abortions after 20 weeks falls in Senate

A bill banning abortion at after 20 weeks failed
to get enough votes in the Senate this afternoon.
Sixty votes were needed for the bill.

Though abortion is a highly partisan issue in Washington,
two people from each party crossed party lines. Democrats
Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Joe Manchin of West Virginia
voted in favor of the bill, while Republicans Susan Collins of
Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted against it.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell likely brought the bill,
and a second anti-abortion bill

Trump loyalists made deceptive, stupid, and hideous remarks

"...infuriated abortion rights supporters, who note that infanticide
is already illegal and argue that Sasse’s bill is actually meant to
dissuade doctors from performing late-term abortions in the first place."

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) described the bill Monday as
“clearly anti-doctor, anti-woman and anti-family.”

“It has no place becoming law. Its proponents claim it would
make something illegal that is already illegal,” Murray said
on the Senate floor. She added that the legislation would
“do nothing except help Republicans advance their goal
of denying women their constitutionally protected rights.”

Federal Appeals Court Upholds Trump's Anti-Women,
Anti-Choice "Gag Rule"

"Leaving women in the dark about their healthcare
and restricting doctors from providing candid advice
is simply not in the best interest of public health."

Women's healthcare advocates fumed Monday after a federal appeals court upheld the Trump-Pence administration's so-called domestic "gag rule."

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals handed down the 7-4 decision regarding the administration's policy of preventing Title X funds from going to clinics that provide referrals for abortions, even though no federal funds pay for abortions.

"As a reminder," said Planned Parenthood Action, "the gag rule puts up egregious barriers for people with low incomes to get birth control and preventive care like STI testing, education, and cancer screenings. Before being forced out of Title X, Planned Parenthood served 40% of patients in the program."

The reproductive rights group praised the dissent written by Judge Richard Paez.

"The majority would return us to an older world, one in which a government bureaucrat could restrict a medical professional from informing a patient of the full range of healthcare options available to her," he wrote. "Fortunately, Congress has ensured such federal intrusion is no longer the law of the land."

Judge Paez, who was joined by three other judges, wrote:
“[T]he majority sanctions the agency’s gross overreach
and puts its own policy preferences before the law.
Women and their families will suffer for it.”
