While we're on the general subject of women, women's rights and pregnancy I present the above. Women of color are three times more likely to die during or shortly after childbirth. There is a long history of this, not just of neglect as was the case with the above but apparently black people have higher pain tolerance than whites. https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/I wish someone told me that! I've never given birth but I'm told its unpleasant. I can't imagine not getting the same strength of drugs because I looked more like Beyonce than Mariah Carey.

When we talk about systemic racism we don't just mean the justice system. We mean the whole thing and not all of it is intentional.

bullshit

when will people learn that 'saying an extra prayer' isn't about to do anything other than allay some sense in the prayee of not doing enough? ffs

While I hate thoughts and prayers if I understood the statement properly it was more that they can't watch every POC every step of the way. Other doctors, nurses etc etc are going to be involved. Though I would start by making sure this information is readily available.

Mariah Carey is of mixed race. Her father is black and she has come out and claimed to be black.

Heathens always think they know everything.

Ignorance is bliss.

he's a very vocal supporter of all anti-black action. he's a cunt...and not in the good way.
I've only glanced at his pists but this gem certainly caught my eye. Do you think he's aware that in his racist rant he admitted that black babies are smart as hell?

he couldn't see past his own racist meme

It is because of the way they are born. Black baby's don't come out head first. The hand comes out first: either facing up to beg or facing down to grab and steal something

jesus, what a racist pos.

In saying that, I learned to slow down and observe, when I hear angry White South Africans bashing Black SA's.

Is it racism, or is it about the spike in killings of White SA's by Black SA's, which followed the Apertheid?

wow. Never knew it's that bad.

I might be wrong as I don't live in the US
but I don't think that, in this day and age, Black women are given less care than White women. That sort of things would hit tabloids in no time, it would gut medical practice and political careers

I suspect it's because Medical Research is geared mostly towards Whites. (a different sort of racism)
For example, according to recent research. the blanket advice: drink ++ milk harms Black people. In fact, they have adequate Calcium in their body and don't tend to develop osteoporosis.

in saying that, I was a bit off topic

How specifically will you see that playing out, in Southern Red States that will ban abortions?

We can make some basic improvements, starting with birthing position. Lying on a bed while pushing the baby out reduces push power and opening. Squatting, sitting on a birthing stool, and all fours can be easier and faster positions.

Seen As Black Woman

Carey spoke with Questlove about her identity.

Mariah Carey sat down for an interview with Questlove and spoke on the importance of being seen as a Black woman. Carey appeared on the podcast to plug her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

The songstress said that because she was so light-skinned when she said that she was Black, people would look at her and be confused, so she began explaining that her father was Black and her mother was Irish to avoid confusion.

She also spoke out on Black folks claiming that she has only recently embraced her Blackness. Carey said she has always embraced her Blackness, despite what others thought.

“There was never a non-embracing, she said. “What did you expect me to do? I can’t tattoo it on my forehead,” said Carey.
The “Vision Of Love” singer said she has always claimed her Blackness. She said she wore her naturally curly hair and never tried to alter her appearance to look more white.

So, once again I take the time to contribute to the edification of users too stupid to know what they are talking about in hopes that doing so accelerates the evolutionary process of those who have been left behind.

2 studies recently published in the same journal point out the problems with pulse oximeters, whose readings give a higher rate of inaccuracy the more skin pigmentation present. This causes all kinds of issues, as you can imagine. I've not done a deep dive into the actual studies, just relating the article with link, but since it's addressing blood oxygenation levels and the painful, invasive physical tests aren't normally done except in dire cases, i'm thinking these findings came about from covid-related data?

Pulse oximeters clip onto a fingertip and pass red and infrared light through the skin to gauge oxygen levels in the blood. It has been known since the 1970s that skin pigmentation can throw off readings, but the discrepancies were not believed to affect patient care.

Among 3,069 patients treated in a Boston intensive care unit (ICU) between 2008 and 2019, people of color were given significantly less supplemental oxygen than would be considered optimal compared to white people because of inaccuracies in pulse oximeter readings related to their skin pigment, the study found.

For the study, pulse oximetry readings were checked against direct measurement of blood oxygen levels, which is not practical in the average patient because it requires a painful invasive procedure.
A separate team reported recently in the same journal https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2792653 that racial and ethnic biases in pulse oximetry accuracy have resulted in delayed or withheld treatments among Black and Hispanic patients with COVID-19.

past time for the manufacturers to address this issue

Systemic racism is the current alibi for black failure when there is no evidence of racial discrimination. Blacks should learn from white examples. We are not responsible for their deficiencies.
