Wish me Luck!

.... it was advertised under customer service, what it really is is 'sales' the company is called JD and Associates, they sale Air purifiers and my job would be to go out set these up, and show what they do, answer questions of the customers, and take orders if they decide to buy one. i have no experience, but he said they will train, which is good. it's not at all what i was looking for.

Not to rain on your parade rose, but the job you are being offered is outside sales, pure and simple. It may have been advertised as an "indoor air quality technician" (like I got sucked in with) position or something else. But you will be expected to get out on your own to demo X (5, 8, 10, however many) number of units to friends, family, and anyone you can get to sit still for one during your "training period". You will have to cultivate your own sales leads from your customers to get those 15 appointments/week. If you are _lucky_ someone in the office will schedule the appointments for you from the information you provide them.

Sorry sweety, but I've been there, done that. We started training with almost 40 people. I was one of only 3 who finished the training and I had nothing to show for it except a "get out there and knock 'em dead tiger!" pat on the back. It's an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to do sales and is driven to succeed. It will abso-freaking-lutely suck for someone needing more structure in their work environment because you are TOTALLY on your own unless they've bothered changing the way these things work.

It's a great product, don't get me wrong, but I don't do sales. You may find it works very well for you and if so, best of luck. But if you don't want to be in your car driving around all day looking for people to sell stuff to, be ready to move on.

actually, they have a telemarketing department in their building, (it's actually the job i applied for but they felt i would be better doing this yea right) that sets up ALL of the appointments, so it's not just me knocking on doors or calling people ..it's all Pre-scheduled appts. that was one of the benefits they stated during the 'introduction' before the one on one interviews. we are given 2-3 appts. a day each appt. is $20.00 we get up to 15 appts. a week if we get sales it's 250.00 bonus there is a potential to make 1,000.00 a week. though i'm sure i will be closer to the 200.00 a week bracket. but even without ANY sales for the week it's 360.00 before taxes. that's just for going and doing the demo. there is no 'cold knocking' every appt. we go to is one taht is pre set up.

with all of that said, i am not going into this with my eyes closed, i'm well aware of the way these things work, i worked in a telemarketing company for 7 months, i'm aware of shady business...it goes with the business. also, they don't just throw us out there by ourselves after training, they set us up with someone that's been doing it for a long time and we go around with them for a couple of weeks before doing it on our own. *shrugs* can't hurt to try

:D Congrats, Rose!!! I hope things continue to go well for you!!! :cathappy:

Sounds like a more "mature" operation than the one I got involved with, rose. And that you've got a good sense "radar" operating. I do hope that things go well for you!

Actually after her first day of training, it sounds exactly like what you described.

as my dad always said, you can't bullshit the bullshitter, and my bullshit meter was going off yesterday at the interview and 400 times more today during training  and they of course told us not to go home and listen to anyone trying to tell us negative things *grins* as if we're not smart enough to figure it out on our own that we're being fed a line of bullshit. like i said they seemed shady to me from the beginning when i applied for 'customer service' and now am told it's 'sales' when i went to the interview. anyway, i'm gonna ride out the training , we get pizza on Friday (haha) but i'm looking for something else..this just isn't what i want.....

yeah pizza! *giggles*

Never hurts to keep looking. And infact I tell the crew that come in with half a brain to keep looking for something better. If you aren't looking to move up at mcd's and you have more than half a brain, you really need to keep moving on to something better. There's nothing wrong with looking for another job while you're at one you really don't care for. Infact, it takes a lot of the preasure off of you. You don't need that job because you have one, so you can hold out for better pay or better shifts or what ever.

My son recently worked for a company selling replacement windows.
He was in telesales and was cold calling on the phone all day.
When he got a lead it was passed to the customer services (sales in other words) and they went out to make a sale.
It was hard core selling, the sales people were clearly told not to leave the house without the customer signing up for windows.
One sales man left as he felt forced to ask an old lady to sign up for windows she clearly could not afford.
Those sales people who did not have the balls to keep at it did not survive long in the company.
My son was telephone cold calling for 10 months. The level of hard sale for the customer services team never interested him, because of the pressure to 'seal the deal.'

Rose, I am glad this job offer has given you confidence, I have often thought it is easier to get a job once you have a job; I hope this works out in whatever way is right for you.

That does not mean I am raining on your parade, but if you smell bullshit you are going in eyes more open than if you didn't think something was up.

This company think you have the potential to make the grade, otherwise they would not have given you the job.
Look at the other people on the training with you, I bet you are easily a better sales person than them for all kinds of reasons, including being a single mum.

Single mum skills are essential to sell anything:
Everytime you had to make one of your kids do something they didn't want to do, and yet they ended up doing it.
Everytime you had to negotiate when you could get them what they wanted, as you didn't have the money right now.
Everytime you counter-argued an 'Ahhh please, mum' scenario.

Plus using personal experience to sell and empathising with the customer.

Sounds cold hearted, but apart from you as a person (the main clincher to getting any job), you have a whole range of skills that can be used to make money.

Even if you hate it, having the confidence to look elsewhere will be boosted by your time doing this.

And once you get that first sale you will feel great :)

Rose,
I admire you. Once I found out that a job I got was in sales, I didn't even go to the training. But I think you can do it! And it easier to find a job when you have one, that's true.
Give this a shot, but keep your eyes open for something else as well.
Good Luck! And congratulations on having the file closed.

*smiles* oh please don't admire me, because i am truly thinking about not going to day 2 of training tomorrow..LOL..this job is just NOT me and i know that i cannot do it. not to mention the bullshit they spew is just too much, and the way they talked about poor people. i just don't think i can do it, and it's not like i'm getting paid for training so why waste my time, you know?

Okay if you're not getting paid training then you could probably spend the time better putting in aps other places.

well, after talking to Master about it, we decided that i wouldn't go into the second day of training with that job. it's just not my kind of job, and the company is shady as hell. i hate feeling like i've failed at something once again, but i know that job just wasn't what was best for me. you pay for your own gas, they told us at the interview that they would only send in a 30 mile radius of the town i live in, in training yesterday they tell us it's a 30-65 mile radius. like i said you pay for you own gas, save your receipts and write it off on your taxes. you only get the 20.00 for each appt. if the people are 'qualified' to even get a demo of the product if not, then you're out that 20.00. to make them qualified basically they have to have a GREAT paying job and good credit because it's all financed. when i asked how much the product costs (3 times i asked) the trainer wouldn't tell me, he kept saying, we'll get to that. the second time he said 'it's affordable' affordable for who?? lol

not to mention the people's homes we are going into believe that they have won something, not that i'm going to sale them something, atleast that's what i've heard. *shrugs* i'm going job hunting today. there is a Hotel here that is hiring for a desk clerk they pay 8.00 an hour..that's much more ME *smiles* thanks again everyone!

Reminds me of a story my mom told me the other day.

When her and my dad were first married she "won" a free carpet cleaning. What she got was a sales man trying to sell her a vacumn. They were on wellfare at the time. She said have way thru the demo the guy looks at her and says "Ma'am you can't afford this vacumn."

She smiles at him and replies "I know. You said you'd give me a free carpet cleaning, and I want my carpet cleaned." *giggles* So he cleaned the carpets and left. She said he did a shit ass job of it to, but he did it.

Rose,
I know you will find the job that suits you soon. Stay positive and you will find it. My mom always told me to find something i liked to do and find a way to make money at it. Hense I am a massage therapist. I have faith in you rose. *winks*

thank you cat :rose: sometimes though it's hard to deal with feeling like a failure because i didn't take that step, i felt like i just 'gave up' without really giving it a shot. *shrugs* i also think i beat myself up too much ;) the day after i decided not to go back in, i heard that they are opening up a Telemarketing company in the place i used to work (the telemarketing company i worked for closed their doors in October, which is why i'm unemployed at the moment) and they are company that has been around for a long time. they are opening in April. so maybe that's why this particular job didn't work out. everything happens for a reason. funny how these things happen though :)

I agree that the job was not right for you or in fact, most people.

There are lot's of jobs out there that would be better for you.
