Not that I would download illegally or anything, but I've heard about a site that [this guy I know] called WinMX, but I... *ahem*... his computer seems to be having trouble connecting. Does anyone have an idea as to why? Or has the site had legal issues?

Curious, before I .. excuse me... HE goes online and winds up in some sort of trouble.

If my memory serves me, Colly was talking about such a site being closed down the other day...............not sure if it was WinMX , but I'm sure it was mentioned during the discussion. A PM to her might get you an answer.

Thanks

me, too. for like 3 days now. hrm.

Colly was talking about such a site being closed down the other day..

i would be heartbroken. say it ain't so.

A site?
I thought WinMX was a program.

There are several networks that run the MX protocol. At least there was when I last looked.

I just checked in Abs.
Colly posted on page 3492, posts 87,286, 7 and 8.

Apparently the RIAA had shut down Wnmx??

Does that sound like it??

It's the recording industry. They managed to shut down winmx.

Assholes.

I never downlaoded any of their music, but I did download porn from there. Now I can't downlaod anything. I'll never buy another fucking CD again, I can promise you that.

Bastiges.

Hope this helps.

Dammit. Ahh well. My, uh, friend never got what he wanted off there anyway.

On to the next file sharing site, for someone who would do that anyway.

Winmx is down. The recording industry served seven p2p providers cease and desist orders in the wak of the grokster ruling.

If, you don't want to see your winmx priveldges revoked by those assholes, there is a solution.

You need to log onto google and search for winmx + host.

basically, the only problem you have is that your host file is looking for winmx supernodes that no longer exist. You can circumvent this by downloading a new hosts file that simply skips the supernodes and goes directly to the still running winmx servers.

the instructions for doing it are so simple even I managed it.

If you have any trouble let me know.

Nothing aggravates me like the heavy handed tactics the recording industry is using. Like dragging 12 year olds into court and trying to make p2p providers responsible for the content shared using their programs. It's rediculous, but because they have the money and lawyers, they have been able to scare several into shutting down ather than fighting the court battles.

Thank you very much. :rose:

This might help some people. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I will later today.

To get the server.wsx go to www. gotnap.com
1) Login...create a Login and password.
2) Wait for your confirming email.
3) Click on "Clients Formats"
4) Click on " servers.wsx"
5) Save it in a folder (your winmx folder is a good spot)
6) Open you Winmx program and click on OpenNap Protocal Networks.
7) Click on "Import.WSX and go to the folder where you downloaded servers.wsx. Double click on it and it will load up the list of servers that are shown on the Serverlist at gotnap.com.
8) Once servers are loaded, click (highlight) on what server(s) you want to connect. Then click on the "Connect" button and you are in business!!

I found it on a P2P website with user chats.

WinMX.exe is a program. Having that program on your computer allows you to use the WinMX website, where you can download music & movies from other users. *ahem* Or so I hear. From friends.
Ah. I see. we're probably talking about the same thing here, but our terminlogogy doesn't match. When you say "website" I only think of sites accessed via a web browser. Like this one. The WinMX I have here connects to servers and nodes, but not to web pages.

The winmx pp network was controlled by something called suprenodes that were stored on the website. As far as I can tell, these were basically an index of all the running winmx servers. When the site went down, the supernodes went with it. You could still use winmx as an open nap file shareing program, but with the nodes gone, you couldn't connect to the servers.

To fix this, someone simply indexed the servers and rewrote a host file that has the actual server adresses indexed, rather than directing you to the webstie and the supernodes.

I don't really understand computers that well, so I may be wrong. I do know with the updated hosts file, winmx works just fine :)

I used to use WinMX, but Ares seems to be able to do everything WinMX can (could?) do.
Ares is tosh for content though. Nothing worth downloading. I was looking for a Buffy episode - Nightmares (which I actually own legally, it's just 200 miles away from me atm), mainly because I wanted to watch the scene with the tarantulas and revel in how much I'm not scared. Could I find it? Could I buggery.

Anyone know where I can get it, a PM would be appreciated.

I've only ever looked for music and porn on Ares, so I don't know about any other content. For my purposes, it was adequate. WinMX always seemed to have long queues for anything worthwhile.

Okay, so I did all this, and it was easy, and it's registering on the OpenNap list that I'm connected to a few, but on the PeerNetwork screen, I'm still getting a yellow light.

Any ideas?

Oh, and that song in your sigline... Know who sings that? In case I get this thing all straightened out.

Qc,

to get the peer network to work, download a new host file. There are a few online now. If you're reallying having trouble, shoot me a note at shywriter1969@yahoo.com and I'll send you a copy of mine. Just drop it in the right place and you should be able to do a direct connect

eMule is a pretty decent p2p client which I've been using for quite a few years now. And their new Kademlia network is as anonymous as it gets without delving into the murky waters of Freenet. It's open source, and the Kademlia network is an open protocol as well, without any central points that can be shut down.

Observation

Considering how rightfully upset we get when our copyrighted stories are copied elsewhere, I'm surprised this topic was raised here.
