I am thinking about upgrading from ME to XP. Can you give me the pros and cons of XP. Friend told me his cam did not work with XP.

Not had a problem with xp more stable than 95 and 98
and most hardware manafactures have upgrade drivers now unless the unit is older than about 4 years

If I had it to do over again, I would go with 2000, not XP. XP, when I got it a year ago on my new computer, had a lot of bugs that still needed to be worked out, and with those bugs, a ton of downloads.

I tried to install Norton's Internet Security, and it messed with the Java Script. I couldn't go anywhere on my computer with it installed....guess that helped keep me from getting any viruses :)....

From what I have heard, ME is bad, so anything will be an improvement for you.......

XP Vs ME

Go with XP as soon as you can...I've had both and XP is by FAR a better OS. It's stable and reliable and "System Restore"...taking your system back to a previous date/time if it gets buggy after installing a program or hardware...is worth it alone.

Cheers!

This computer I'm on came with Me...we hated it. Too many lockups and crashes. XP has cleared up all of those problems. New problems did crop up however. Web Cam wasn't compatible (had to get a new one) CD burner wasn't compatible either. Had to order upgraded drivers. Otherwise, XP is much better than Me.

I just upgraded today from 98se to XP home, after a wek of trying to upgrade various versions of 2 other computers to XP.

My finding(s)... make sure your system is FAR above the minimum of 300mhz machines, don't have any funky cards like vid capture cards in there, and nothing more than a year or two on teh system. XP didnt' like it, in fact told me it didn't like my add on USB 2.0 card.

I FINALLY got it loaded this afternoon, onto a higher mhz machine, but haven't messed much with it, but from the machine I've used already with XP on it, I like very much over M.E.

I like 2000 the best, but lots of people like xp better, there are lots of debates over which is better. win xp is more user-friendly than 2000, and that's really the only huge difference. if you're just a casual user, then go for xp, if you need to put as many resources as you have towards something like graphical work or whatever, 2000.

yep XP is a way to go this days ... I like Red Hat but XP would be second choice.

I like XP but I have my hd partitioned to run both XP and 98 since some programs I own that are older won't run on XP. My bf has had some probs with his video card working properly with XP for some of his games but beyond that things are fine. I like the fact it came with Movie Maker software. It's not that great of a program so say the least. You can't do many special effects with it, but I can't afford anything that's actually good so it's worked for making little picture montages or taking a bunch of MPEGs and combining them into one file (will only make .wmv files which also sucks). But in general, I like it!

I went from Me to Windows 2000, I think it is great - if you get an oldish 2K program you will need to install the service packs to get it really stable.

If you are into video's etc MS Media Player 9 is the download you want.

The only hardware I had mega problems with was a scanner that ran through the Printer Port a no no! Have to use a USB scanner ditto the Web Cam I think.

You need at a minimum Pentium II processor, 64 Kb Ram, and 3 Gig Hard Drive, as you are running Me your hardware will run 2K.

jon:devil:

I,too, have a partitioned system. I still need 98se to run my DOS based CAD program. I have XP pro. on the other part and only had problems with AOL7. Now have cable and no more prob.

The real key issue is to get rid of ME. Put on XP, 2000, whatever, just get rid of that lousy mutant OS.
