Great.

First it eats my post then double posts.

I'm still using XP Pro.

What I will do when support stops I do not know.

I hear lots of complaints about everything newer than XP.

I just bought a new laptop. I searched for days to find something close to what I wanted. Nothing newer than Vista Pro, preferably XP. Had to settle for windows 7. I needed a computer, so I decided to take a chance. When it arrived, it was loaded with windows 8!!!
They said 7 was no longer available, so I decided to keep this and try it. Bad decision!
I'm seriously considering saying fuck it and erasing this crap and loading Vista.

I'm still on XP. I've been.considering upgrading to 8, but think I'll wait awhile.

Windows 8 is so confusing! I'm a computer technician and I hate everything about Win8. If I were you, I'd downgrade to Win7. However that's not as easy as upgrading from XP.

Windows 7 is probably the best, easy and intuitive operating system there is! XP was great, but Win7 is definitely better.

I'd definitely recommend waiting, though for what, I don't know.
I think all this junk is the way of the future.

touch screens.
the 'cloud'
touted as marvels of computing, actually designed to cost consumers big piles of money.

Yes, if I downgrade, it voids the warranty on a new laptop. I'm tempted to do it anyway.
8 won't run any of my older software. So I stand to lose thousands of $ if I have to replace the software.
It would be cheaper to eat the cost of the laptop and go to vista pro.

Exactly why I am putting off the purchase of a new computer

windows 8 is great for phones, I was actually pleasantly surprised at how good it is, but for computers it sucks because its a system built for smartphones, not desktops, so its just irritating

I could see it being a fine os for a smart phone or tablet, but not for a serious computer.

Get an external HD (cheap these days) and install whatever OS you want to use on it. Boot and work from that.

That's actually a good idea, I think. Any idea what effect that might have on operating speed?
I had considered a dual boot system right off the hd, but I think that would still void the warranty.
External drive might be an acceptable compromise till the warranty is up.

"Windows 8 is provoking a Marmite-like reaction among users, but that doesn't mean you'll fall directly into the love or hate camps. It's more likely you'll find certain new features useful and others unnecessary. If you're pining for features no longer present, this article is for you."

Just think about it - howls of complaints about moving on from the Windows 98/ME/CE camp. That horrible Windows NT/XP - that so many want to cling to now. Vista just got rolled out too fast - but in the end it was just fine with installed service packs. Windows 7 has been solid. So just re-adjust your seat, mirrors and learn what the knobs and buttons do and be thankful there are a bunch of geeks out there who can turn out a faster and more secure operating system.

Why don't you return it, are you within the 30 day return period?
I think you'd like Win 7 it is much like Vista but better in most ways.

I have a friend who does this with Linux on the external drive, and he says performance is pretty good if you are using USB 3, a modern high speed external drive, and enable write caching to the USB drive.

Unfortunately, I'm better at thinking up hair-brained ideas than I am at implementation. A quick look online shows that Microsoft doesn't let you install Windows on a USB partition. If you browse the techie forums, you can find work-arounds.

I am going to do something similar with Windows 7 and Linux in a tower. I expect to have it running this week. In my system, there will be 2 different SATA drives in removable drawer mounts that have switches, so I can make them completely invisible to each other.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'll look into that option, but my main issue with win8 is that I can't run older software.
I have a cadcam program that does everything I need it to do, runs great in vista pro, and win8 won't load it. I don't want to shell out another $6000 for software I already have, and works great, just because some douchebag decided it was a good marketing strategy to lock all new computer sales into win8.

I could return it, but I'd still have problems, in that it's so difficult to find a computer with an older operating system.
This one was supposed to have win7, which BTW, I don't know for sure would run this program anyway. When I started it up, imagine my surprise when I saw 8 staring me in the face.

I have run ubuntu and win xp on a dual boot setup, and that was fine, but unfortunately what this all hinges on is my old cadcam program which won't run on a linux system either.

Is there anything at all to like about this piece of shit?

Not a single thing. My laptop which came with it is nearly unusable.

I did just discover that it also came with a speech recognition program that seems interesting.

There have been so many os changes over the years, I've gotten used to most of them, it just takes a little time.
Although, I do still miss DOS once in awhile...

My chief complaint with this is there's no real choice. All new computers are being pushed with win8, and I haven't found anything yet that this is backward compatible with.

I think perhaps a more significant consideration is if you are running 32 or 64 bit versions. 64 bit versions will not run any 16 bit code, 32 will. So the 32 bit version of win 7 might run your program.

There is a myth suggested by MS that 32 bit OSs can't address more than 4 GB of RAM, they are just pushing to sell more OSs. Yes, they have limited the 32 bit consumer OSs so that they cannot access more but there is a registry hack to allow it.
