Per the AP, Windows 8.1 will be available Wednesday, tomorrow. If you're currently running Windows 8, check it out. I will.

Windows 8.1 will be available as a preview starting Wednesday for anyone to download. It will be released to the general public later in the year, though a specific date hasn't been announced.

Windows 8, which was released in October, was meant to be Microsoft's answer to changing customer behaviors and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s.

But some people have been put off by the radical makeover.

Although Microsoft has said it has sold more than 100 million Windows 8 licenses so far, some analysts have blamed the lackluster response to the operating system for a steep drop in PC sales in the first three months of the year, the worst drop since tracking by outside research firms began in 1994.

Among the complaints: the lack of a Start button on the lower left corner of the screen. In previous versions of Windows, that button gave people quick access to programs, settings and other tasks. Microsoft replaced that with a tablet-style, full-screen start page, but that covered up whatever programs people were working on, and it had only favorite programs. Extra steps were needed to access less-used programs. Settings, a search box and other functions were hidden away in a menu that had to be pulled out from the right. How to do that changed depending on whether a mouse or touch was used.

And while Microsoft has encouraged people to use the new tablet-style layout, many programs — including Microsoft's latest Office software package — are designed for the older, desktop mode. People were forced into the tablet layout when they start up the machine and had to manually switch the desktop mode each time.

Windows 8.1 will allow people to start in the desktop mode automatically. In that mode, it is restoring a button that resembles the old Start button. Although the Start button will now take people back to the new tablet-style start screen, rather than the old Start menu, the re-introduction of the familiar button may make it easier for longtime Windows users to get accustomed to the changes.

Other new features of Windows 8.1 include more options to use multiple apps. People will get more options to determine how much of the screen each app takes while showing up to four different programs, rather than just two. The update will also offer more integrated search results, showing users previews of websites, apps and documents that are on the device, all at once.

Although Microsoft is addressing much of the criticisms with Windows, it is positioning the update as more than just a fix-up job. From its perspective, the tuneup underscores Microsoft's evolution into a more nimble company capable of moving quickly to respond to customer feedback while also rolling out more innovations for a myriad of Windows devices — smartphones, tablets or PCs.

It's crucial that Microsoft sets things right with Windows 8.1 because the outlook for the PC market keeps getting gloomier. IDC now expects PC shipments to fall by nearly 8 percent this year, worse than its previous forecast of a 1 percent dip. IDC also anticipates tablets will outsell laptop computers for the first time this year.

I made sure that my new laptop had Windows 7 in it. From the commercials I viewed about 8, I determined I didn't want any of what it thought was new and nifty.

I'm happy with 7. I don't want my PC or laptop to act like cell phones or tablets. I likely won't leave 7 until it's useless. And then I'll go to what ever program kicking and screaming.

Windows 8 is an invention of the devil! There is nothing good to be said for it unless one is a toddler who can't manipulate a mouse. If all 8.1 does is add a START button it is insulting. As soon as I am able and my little business expands a touch I will simply get a good laptop with 7 on it and add a keyboard and a wireless mouse. Stupid Windows 8!

Finding a computer of any type with 7 on it is very hard to do. Windblows is also buying up all the copies of 7 it can find. They re trying to make it 8 or nothing.

I see a lot of people switching to Linux.

That sucks to hear. I have 7 on my two year old lap top so I guess I am not getting a new one anytime soon.

But all I have on here is my writing I have zero apps and never download anything. Text takes up zero memory so hopefully I can make this puppy last a good long time.

Windows 8

I bought a new laptop a few months ago which came with Windows 8. I tried it, I really did; but God, I hated it so much I actually downgraded the OS to Windows 7. 8 was a total nightmare.

With each 'improved' OS step forward Microshaft takes, they then take a step back.

For example, Win 98 was just fine, Win 2000 sucked, XP was fine, Vista sucked, Win 7 is cool and I'm not in any rush to get Win 8. :D

Going Linux is easy, almost, but it does require you know a little about it.

Ubuntu 13.4 is out and You can get free apps by the bazillions. You can even leave the Windoze on your computer for apps that need it.

I recommend that you get a copy of Puppy on a flash drive as an emergency item to allow you to access your hard drive if your OS blows up. It isn't real big and you can get a cheap flash drive to hold it and a good deal of rtf's too.

I think if you put all their apps together, Google has actually introduced an new OS. They just don't call it that.

The problem with using old operating systems is that, sooner or later, support for the operating system is withdrawn. Then, when you have a problem, there's no solution.

Sure there will be a solution...it will be called Window After8 and it will be a hopped up Windows 7 with touch screen capable apps for those who want their desktop to act like their phone.

Actually, anyone with a Intel processor can switch to the Apple OS. What is it now Leopard 12 or 13? You might have to change some components out but it runs on an Intel chipset now.

I have Windows 8 on the new laptop. Considering my lack of knowledge regarding anything to do with running a computer, even I agree it sucks. Nothing is simple. I need simple. I like simple. :(

The only people who think Win8 is simple are about 12 years old and only have an a windows phone or a windows tablet, both touch screens. With them and on them Win8 is simple. Hook up a keyboard and a mouse and that's when things get complicated.

Yeah, and I passed 12 a few years ago.

I have yet to understand quite why Windows (sorry Microsoft) feel it necessary to change things all the time.
Port a copy of an Operating System to a Tablet (should that be a pill?) but leave us long-term users with a desktop PC a thing we can use.
And big business is often still thinking in terms of XP if only because their system works (Banks are a good example).

They change all the time to sell new stuff, don't they?

(I guess if Zeb had posted this, I should have known he was just be sarcastic. But I think my problem there is that I don't really think of Zeb as being that intelligent.)

I would put you on iggy, but I get a laugh every time you post. Doesn't matter what it is as all your posts are laughable.

Oh...no sarcasm intended asshole.

I've fiddled with it in store displays and it's not happening.

I'm sticking with 7 until I have absolutely no choice. Most of what I do is going to be crippled by that interface, and all the new features are of zero interest to me.

And if you want a tablet that can do anything with that OS you have to upwards of $500 and the keyboard/cover is $120 extra! All that for a tablet that really can't do anything but surf the web and make Skype calls. And there's no upgrade path for the tablet.

If you know anything at all about Bill Gates and Microsoft you know that the following is his usual business plan:

1. Start the PR/BS blitz for the new OS that doesn't exist yet.
2. Design the new OS box.
3. Twist lotsa arms to order the OS that doesn't exist yet.
4. Fix an annoying problem on the old OS and re-issue it as the new OS.

Yep...let see...

Windows 3.1 ... Windows 95
Windows 95 ... Windows 95sp1
Windows 95 ... Windows NT (This was supposed to be the business OS)
Windows 95 ... Windows 98 (Actually the same as 95sp1 with lipstick)
Windows 98 ... Windows ME (What a piece of shit)
Windows NT ... Windows 2000(NT 5.0) - Actually not a bad one if you bought Professional (based on the NT 4.0 platform.)
Windows 2000 ... Windows XP(NT 5.1) (it was shit when it first arrived, but Bill finally got it work well enough so that it became the favorite of Business)
Windows XP ... Windows Vista(NT 6.0) (it took two sp's to get it stable, yet business refused to hook up with it because of it's large footprint)
Windows Vista ... Windows 7(NT 6.1) (Reviewed as the most successful OS put out by Microsoft. Really a trimmed down version of Vista with lipstick)
Windows 7 ... Windows 8(NT 6.2) (Fail - works great on a phone, falls flat on its face on a desktop or laptop)

Comments are my opinion.
