I was playing mp3s in Winamp Pro v. 5.04 this morning, and everything was working great. Then, when I opened a new song, it was playing, but there was no sound. It's not the files, speakers, etc....none of them play in Winamp, but they work in Windows Media. Also, none of the other sounds on the computer work when Winamp is open. I've also tried checking the options, restarting, and looking in the winamp help forum, but I can't really decipher what they're saying. I'm using XPpro.

Any ideas on how to restore the sound would be greatly appreciated! :rose:

Hi Erika!

I would delete, and reinstall the winamp. If your sound isn't working with the program open, you've got a buggy boo. Especially if the sound works with Windows Media. That would be an easy way to go about it, I think :)

Thanks for the input, Saldne. Reinstalling is in my hubby's arena, so we'll see what he can do when he comes home. :)

Oh dear.
Did you also make sure its not a corrupt music file or some form of Trojan horse that will do the same to Winamp every time you play it?
If it was from your own collection then its okay, but if it was (shock, horror) downloaded then you may have picked something up. In which case make your virus software is up to date too!

Tis true. I would recommend downloading Trend Micro PC-cillin firewall and anti-virus. It's all in one, and works fabulous!

Music files aren't a problem with regard to viruses. Playlist files can be though (there was an exploit with them in Winamp a little while back - quite possibly your version).

I'd check Winamp's volume control and also there are some settings in Winamp as to where Winamp outputs sound. It might be set to play sound out of a headphone jack or something that isn't plugged in for example.

Reinstall can also work (cause you'd be resetting all the settings to default). :nana:

Thanks for the tips, Vancouverite and Bob, I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, we found the cause to be a mixture of my stupidity, my husband's never ending quest for appealing skins, and a buggy skin...it turns out the mute button on that particular skin turned off the volume, but clicking it again didn't turn it back on. In addition, the volume control was yet another unlabeled button, as opposed to a slide type control or anything that looked like it might actually control volume. Needless to say, we've switched to a decipherable skin that we know works.

well there are 'music files' floating around that aren't actually music files, spoof files and what not that have, allegedly (well and reportedly) been let free on the internet to inconvenience file swappers.

Glad you got it sorted out though, SweetErika. I don't see where your stupisity comes into it if your hubby goes around installing oddball skins, though!
