Will that be one bullet or two?

Why are we reluctant to shoot the condemned in the head? I think that would be the most humane. I think you're dead before you hear the shot. Having your heart shredded has got to hurt.

Why not bring back the guillotine?

Ask Dostoyévskiy, it's the terror of the anticipation that impresses the condemned.

If the rule is Barbarism as a deterrent, who cares the form?

You do know how the head is picked up from the basket and shown to the crowd? But it is also the other way around, the crowd is shown to the still conscious head too.

However, yeah, I would probably choose guillotine too, if it come to that and was an option.

Bullet to the back of the head might be close second, but however small, has a chance of all kinds of weird. People have walked in physician's office with steel rods sticking through their own scull, and at least that one guy needed second shot to finish the job firing form his one load shotgun in his mouth. People aren't at all that fragile we sometimes think (nor as though as we pretend to be either).

Put it on a pike and crucify the body!

That should produce the proper peasantry...

hey...

I believe execution of those people, that the law has found it necessary, for them to die, that the execution regardless of the method should be a Public Display and spectator attendance should be mandatory.

I agree with Matty on this one...

I applaud your personal integrity. I do not share it, but I can say that it takes a certain kind of strength to stand there on your principles and let someone go basically scott free after they tried to, or succeeded in, torture and murder of either yourself or a loved one.

If they murder me, do I care?

Remember, personalizing is the refuge of those with weak argument...

;) ;)

On a personal level, I might try to kill such a person, but I'm not going to ask you to

'pull the trigger' for me. It would be an act of immediate passion.

Is not immediate passion that which drives the mob?

I was all for no death penalty when there was life without the possibility of parole and was happy with my decision.
And then, this scumbag who brutalized a little girl before strangling her and agreed to plead guilty and take life to avoid the death penalty … well, after about 20 years he figured a Supreme Court ruling gave him another shot.
He got it and it didn't work so he's still life without parole.
These assholes keep getting second chances. He's not on death row.
The way things are going politically here, soon we're going to be giving weekend paroles to prisoners who aren't on death row.

I'm not arguing with you about your personal integrity. It's your belief and I support you for actually saying it out loud.

Criminal behavior has consequences. The law specifies those consequences based on tradition, history, and societal beliefs. Thus it is not "personal" for someone like me to support the law and the penalties imposed by the law for anti-social behaviors, it's professional.

The only question I never see asked or answered whenever this particular discussion topic comes up, is whether anyone would willingly be an official witness to an execution.

Many will say they'd protest or support the execution, but few will actually sit there and witness it. I daresay that "passion" is not present in any form for that. Nor is retribution or revenge.

It's not humane because if you don't aim correctly, they don't die. The only true way to immediately kill someone is destruction of the brain stem. Severe/destroy that, and the person is dead before they hit the ground.

While people playing first person shooters like to aim for the head as a whole, those trained to kill (i.e. snipers) will tell you to aim for the area between the nose and top of the mouth. If the shot is true, the bullet passes right through the brain stem.

Having said that, outside of torturing someone to death, I'm not all that interested in being humane to murderers, rapists, pedophiles, or those who abuse animals. Kill them. If they suffer a few moments, no big deal considering the suffering they inflicted.

Like Michael Dukakis gave to Willie Horton.

I hate the fallacy of the exception when the Left uses it, do you think then that I approve of it when the right uses it?

I am against the death penalty, but if we are going to prove how barbaric we still are, I have no problem with any means used to carry out the primitive rites...

I will note, as I do often when it comes to subjective valuation, your extreme case today tends to become almost normative and then it allows for the next almost-as-eggregious an example to be included into the execution pool and as the pool grows, it gets harder and harder to define where exactly you think it should end, because you don't get to make the decision. When it comes to subjective measure, you are just one and in order to make your vision true, you have to compromise with those of a different vision. This is why I try to stick to the more Objective standard of jurisprudence.

without a second thought and with no remorse

That's exactly what the proponent of abortion proclaims because it is in the here and now and expedient problem-solving. Many years later, when the woman has time to reflect and contemplate upon her life, no one is there for her in her time of regret. She might even face harsh penalties such as being societally ostracized for having left the faith.

Remorse is an emotion which tends to be less immediate when working within the parameters of the motivated mob.

Chinese executions seem to go pretty well.
