WHY MEN EARN MORE, Warren Farrell
Farrell worked for NOW and researched why women make less money than men. The question was: If women work for significantly less money, why would anyone hire a man? Farrell says he believed that women were discriminated against when he began the study, but no longer believes it. Consequently, he lists 25 ways women self-inflict low pay on themselves.
The results are generally speaking.
1. Women refuse to do dangerous work or take physical risks.
2. Women refuse to relocate to unappealing cities.
3. Women prefer glamor careers or performing, but wait tables until they big break comes.
4. Women want to work 9-5 with weekends off.
Farrell details how the big money is linked with danger, problems, inconvenience, isolation, etc. The average woman cant be bothered with relocating to the Amazon jungle or working on oil rigs.
Farrell also discovered that where all things are equal, women usually earn more for the same work that men do. Like pharmacists, for example. So, if you work in a bank or convenience store or teach or work as a librarian or nurse, you already make more than the guys who work with you.
Farrell fills the book with schemes that women can use to game the system. When females join the military or fire department or drive cabs (the dangerous jobs) they get the best jobs available. Take reporters in Iraq: The male reporters are murdered a lot more often than females...7 to 1 ratio. The guys cover the fighting, the women interview moms and teachers. Same money. Farrell encourages women to get into dangerous jobs and let the system protect them, it will.
