Why wait for conception?

You had better believe that there are people out there advocating just that.

You must be aware that in many places these people have been successful in their advocacy. Masturbation, even in private, is illegal in some places. I believe it is actually a court martial offense for members of the US Armed Forces, at least it was when I was in the Air Force. Anal and oral intercourse were illegal in Calif until about 30 years ago and are still illegal in some places. These are stupid laws and should all be repealed but politicians are too spineless and afraid of losing votes to do the right thing.

Preserving Human Life

Each woman is born with more than 200,000 eggs.

When brought to ripeness, they can be induced to divide, and generate a human person (who'd look like the woman's daughter, I suppose).

I believe, Sher, that some kind of egg registry could be set up, to keep track.

Of special interest are the 400 or so, she will naturally ripen and issue over her lifespan. These could be tracked individually to insure no losses (or if so, to hold her or whomever responsible).

With supercomputers, it would be easy to keep a 'sher' file, and you could receive govt email every 28 days, saying

Dear Ms. Sher... We believe egg #195 is almost 'on scene'; the egg-accounting form should be submitted in the next seven says;

if there is any delay of egg issuance, you are to inform us and provide documentation (daily temperature records may be entered through your internet acct.), so that the accounting period may be extended.

as before, attached to the accounting form, Supplement A, should list the occasions of semen reception, in the seven day period around the issuance of this egg.

your cooperation is greatly appreciated,.

On a somber note, haven't we all had days at work like this?

LOL!

Yes. Too many of them was one of the main reasons I went insane.

But I'm much better now.

I'm not letting this thread die. I hijacked fair and square.

Hmmm. Weird science factoids. I know! How about the various odd defense mechanisms of termites?

There is a genus of termites called the nasutes. Some of the soldier caste are born without jaws, but their heads are shaped into nozzles which allow then to shoot glue or poison at things that penetrate the nest.

The soldiers of another species, in addition to their jaws, have a 'paintbrush' extending from their heads. When they bite something, they paint a chemical on the wound that prevents blood clotting.

And there is a species of termite that defends the nest by blowing itself up. A special muscle allows them to squeeze their stomachs until it, and they, go "POP!"

All these defenses are pretty much aimed at other arthopods (ants, spiders, etc.) as these are the most common attackers of termite nests.

Yer welcome.

There's a seahorse that gestates the young in his mouth.

I think.

And then there's the dung beetle, which my dad knew would guarantee a shriek of laughter from any 8 to 10 year old girl, and any boy from age 9 until around 27.

There are college boys who do the same thing, because it makes the other boys laugh.

I wouldn't know. I never finished high school.

I believe that the fish you mention, the one that carries the young in it's mouth, is the stickleback. But my memory is hazy here, so don't quote me.

However, the male seahorse does carry it's young in a brood pouch near it's stomach. They even look pregnant and go through labour when the young mature.

At this point the female Lits are going "Lucky seahorses". And the guys are saying, "Damn, I'm glad I'm not a seahorse."

And for a final bit of piscean trivia, the male anglefish is much smaller than the female and is parasitic. It's lips grow onto the female and their circulatory systems meld, so the male no longer has to feed itself.

And now the female Lits are mumbling, "Tell me about it. Story of my life."

Colleen? Is the protein coat of a virus alive? Does it take in food and oxygen and excrete waste products?

That's why I don't regard virii as alive. So far as I know, all the energy required to drive the chemical processes of replication come from the host cell.

Hmm. An interesting thought has occurred to me. Does anyone know if there are any organisms that go through a viral stage of their life cycle?

I know some protozoans and bacteria go through a cycle of encystation when times get tough. And as I recall, slime molds go through a stage where they are single celled spores.

Although it sounds unlikely, maybe there are organisms that go from virus to living and back again.

We are talking Mother Nature here. And who would belive in zombies snails?

To my knowledge the cells of the protien coat do under go cellular respiration and mitosis. By that definition the "coat" is alive. The strand of RNA or DNA is not doing anything, it's inert. Alive or not?
Well, it's cell coat is living, is the genetic material encased alive? Dead? or some where in between?

I learn something new everyday. Thanks Colleen.
