Because, they see it all unraveling and are scared shitless.
After three weeks of Bushie's forehead-vein-popping and nostril flaring speeches, his bump was about to vanish because the fulcrum supporting the turnaround of poll numbers was being undermined. Bush's performances were starting to bring back memories of Nikita Khrushchev. I keep waiting for George to take off his shoe and go to town. Yeah, the Republic party was starting to get some traction after Bush's fear mongering display of spittle spray speeches about the war on terror, and has rested its chances on holding onto power on the terror war. They claim they are the party that can be trusted to prosecute the war on terror.
So someone in the Government (one of the very few who hasn't swallowed and suppressed every ounce of self respect) and who is repulsed by Bush's lies about how Iraq has made us safer leaked the intelligence report contradicting Bush. The intelligence report shows everyone who is anyone (as well as most everyone else who has brainwaves) agrees that we are less safe because of the decision to invade Iraq and the extensive bungling thereafter. Maybe if Bush could figure out how to show he understands reality and can refrain from lying every time he talks about Iraq, people in the government wouldn't feel compelled to leak documents which show what a liar he is.
In addition, there was actually a response to the Republi-lies that Clinton did nothing to fight terrorism and it has only been St. Bush that has been there to protect us helpless Amherricuns. Bill Clinton stepped up and answered those distortions quite effectively. Now the Secretary of State has to start campaigning and spinning when she certainly has better things to do. Condi is almost as clownish as her boss, basing her rebuttal to Clinton's statements on her personal definition of what is "a comprehensive plan." Kinda like arguing about what the definition of "is" is, eh? And now they released a whited out copy of the intelligence report which really doesn't contradict anything that the leaker's documents showed: that our involvement in Iraq has made us less safe.
So, the Republicans are so hot and heavy to respond to Clinton and the leaked Intelligence reports because they both rot their sole campaign plank. Can't you just see Karl Rove's fingers all over this? Spinning away? I expect they will be starting to try to diversify their campaign a bit...start talking about the stock market and gas prices.
Meanwhile the media can't figure out how look back a few years and read the 9-11 report, which in itself shows Condi's statements are simple lies of creative definitions.
