Why Johnny Can't Get Into MIT....

That's just scary. First that textbooks are published with that many errors and secondly that our schools are buying them.

Do you see that poster directly above me? That's why we all should be afraid.

:D

Tabby

I'm the product of the modern public schools. Scary thought, no?

:p

Tabby

Told you. And why doesn't Nitelights link work for me anyways?

I can't get into MIT because I really suck at math, I wouldn't want to because I believe this country way overemphasizes math and science at the expense of the liberal arts, the concrete over the ideal, the profitable over the simply intellectual for its own sake ( and I am a Republican, too) We need a sense of philosophy, history, political science, law, things that make us think. Too much emphasis on the technical and business and all you get are worker drones. America needs to develop at least some thinkers as well as technologists.

rambling man

You actually believe that proficiency in math and science leads to "worker drones"?

Suddenly, the article has more merit.

I wonder what the author of the article intends to do about the problem. It would seem to be a waste to throw away the results of the study. Why not talk to the publishers about making corrections? I may be naive, but I don't believe the publishers would turn down a free technical review of this magnitude. Instead of griping about the problem (that's MY job, mister :) ), why don't they use the study to do something about it?

Tabby, I meant that math and science without the intellectual tools that give perspective create worker drones. If you are only math or science oriented and you do not know about history, philosophy, literature, etc., then you do not have a solid background that gives ethical considerations...the world suffers too much when scientists simply do things because they have not been done before without thinking about the consequences, human cloning will be an example. They also do not get the tools to help them ask the right questions. The schools systems do not understand this I don't think.
