I agree, but the mainstream media has some culpability in that it tends to avoid calling the extremists you refer to on the consequences of their actions. One example I'll never forget: the week after the Oklahoma City bombing, Newsweek gave Rush Limbaugh a platform for explaining "Why I'm Not to Blame" (that was literally the title of his piece). The very same Rush Limbaugh who had been stirring up fear and resentment of the government for three hours a day for years even then, and who just a few weeks before had said: "The second violent American revolution is just about – I got my fingers about a quarter of an inch apart – is just about that far away, because these people are sick and tired of a bunch of bureaucrats in Washington driving in to town and telling them what they can and can’t do with their land.”

In other words, with public awareness of the results of right-wing extremism running as high as it ever would, all mainstream media sources had a golden opportunity to shine a light on the truth of the problem. Instead, Newsweek at least chose to give cover to one of the loudest voices on the far right. All too common.
